MARCIE PARISI, MA Profile
At Open Door Tutoring, teenagers are empowered in their development into responsible young adults. While confronting a looming textbook, they discover and develop internal skills that will serve them later in life. With unconditional positive regard toward their feelings, they can learn to keep going even when they feel excruciatingly bored. When a textbook is poorly written, or the work causes frustration, we complain or laugh together while continuing forward. Thus, they develop: fortitude, resilience, persistence, competence, and pride in a job well done. They learn that on the road to success, there is no substitute for good, hard effort. A harmonious mixture of academic knowledge plus keen listening and communication skills is the key to Open Door Tutoring success.

I have been teaching various Biology courses at the CW Post campus of Long Island University for 5 years. Here I have initiated and continue to coordinate our Foundations of Biology courses for non science majors. I feel I have the ability to relate the material to my students everyday lives in an effort to make it easier to understand. My goal is to instill an enthusiasm for science within each and every student. I strive to achieve the student's conceptual understanding of the material rather than concentrate on memorization.

,
Experience ,
Tutoring: We develop and teach customized classes to students who could not be served by the regular school curriculum. This includes a variety of teaching strategies from ADD to gifted. Our Philosophy is that we believe that with enough time and the right kind of instruction, all students can learn . In large classes, teachers are not always able to tailor their instruction to the individual needs of every student. We as tutors can help students discover their individual learning styles so that they can more effectively learn from their teacher. In some cases after a few weeks of intense work a student is able to more effectively learn from their classroom teacher and is ready to work on their own again. In other cases, students find it useful to meet with us on an ongoing basis to supplement classroom instruction. We are highly knowledgeable, reliable and provide excellent service.

Brittany Porter Profile
Hi! My name is Brittany and I'm an aspiring writer and educator who's just officially moved to NYC. I graduated from a liberal arts college this year, with a completed publish-worthy Honors thesis (on ADHD, its history and quasi-neurology). I love to teach have many years of tutoring and teaching experience, both formal and informal. I've worked as a teaching assistant for four high-need high school classes, and this year Im working toward my secondary certification. If you're looking for someone patient, down-to-Earth, funny (but down-to-*business when we need to be), who can put you at ease with the material, look no further.
I am comfortable and have ample experience with kids of all ages, from 2 to 92, from your second-grade child who needs a boost with her reading to the high schooler whose trigonometry just ain't sticking, to the adult nursing student who needs help with orgo. I would also be glad to help with writing and editing papers and conducting basic academic research (MLA anyone?). I love working with LD folks (I think of us as quirky learners more than disabled ones&), or just taking anyone who's feeling frustrated and overwhelmed and bringing it all down to size for them. At the risk of sounding like a jack-of-all-trades, I'll say that I have comfort and experience with the following subjects, should you need assistance with any (or all?) of them:
* MATH: All levels through pre-calculus: basic arithmetic, ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY, TRIGONOMETRY/PRE-CALC, (I'm re-teaching myself Calculus now, so I make no guarantees with calculus proper.) Also well-versed in basic STATISTICS: Excel, number-crunching, theory, experimental design and set-up, etc.
* SCIENCES: My specialty is BIOLOGY, especially genetics, neuroscience, evolution and ecology. But if you're struggling with ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, you really should come see me: it is one of my favorite subjects to tutor precisely because I believe it's taught so badly most of the time (hint: orgo is not at ALL about memorization!!). I'm also comfortable with the intro chem curriculum, but please look elsewhere for physics as my background there is scanty.
* WRITING/English/Editing: I'm a poet, linguist, and essayist in my spare time, and one with a deft editor's touch. I would love the opportunity to help folks with their writing, as despite my gifts as a writer I know what a hell writing issues can be. Even the most arcane, technical academic writing can feel like delicate subjective stuff. When I look at others' writing however, I see it in a very different light: I clarify structure, syntax, and phrasing with ease and efficacy. No matter where you're at, I'd be happy to assist.
* BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE SPANISH: Should you need a native speaker for advanced or really intensive work, I'm not it. I'm only semi-fluent, and very rusty with my vocab after lots of years. What I offer for the introductory students among you is a keen ear for pronunciation (Native speakers point it out) and a firm grasp of Spanish flow, conjugation and syntax: I get how the language works and can 'translate' it for you. Oftentimes native speakers or those that are fluent (unless they also happen to be great teachers) can't break things down for a beginner the way that I can, because it's harder for them to 'go back' to where you're at. I've helped dozens of my classmates pass their Spanish classes... or just understand that one grammatical thing they didn't get. This is because I am also a grammar geek and can cogently explain, for instance, transitive and intransitive verbs (ie., why we need those los and las after certain verbs, which to us native English speakers sound so out of place, and why this is only one role the --los and --las can play.) I also have you practice what we do outloud, right there, so it starts to roll off your tongue, too.
* TEST-PREP (SAT's, ACT, Regents, GRE, subject tests&): I hate standardized tests as much as you do. But I do well on them, I 'get' their logic (even if it's a stupid logic) and I hold no secrets sacred. I scored a 1480 on my SAT's (back when the max score was 1600), six years ago.
I'm available immediately, for summer finals or brush-up before Fall. September/October scheduling welcome, too!
I'm flexible as to location and am willing to come meet you wherever you are most comfortable: your home, your school, local library, this great café you love, whereverbut our initial meeting should be somewhere public. I'd also prefer to stay within Brooklyn or Manhattan; anywhere far out of the way will come with stark conditions.
My rate is $30 an hour. Negotiable ($20-25) if you want to schedule more than two hours a week, or if you are a single/struggling parent going back to school, because that means you rock. Block meeting times (ie., 4-6 hours in one shot) could also qualify for a discount, if that's how you roll.
Can't wait to hear from you, and GOOD LUCK with your studies!!

Hello! If you are looking for a motivated, intelligent and responsible tutor, look no more.I graduated from Queens College (summa cum laude)in February 2008 majoring in Psychology (with a concentration on education) and Anthropology. During my time in college, I worked as an English and Math tutor for middle and elementary school students. Under my tutelage, one of my students aced the Specialized High School Admission Test and went on to succeed in the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School.
During this time, I also tutored some of my fellow college students in Spanish. A native Spanish speaker, I helped my students improve their knowledge of Spanish grammar and their proficiency in conversation.
I believe that the most important thing a teacher can pass on to his students is a passion for knowledge and hope to bring about in my students the love I feel for the subjects that I teach.

A private tutor can provide you with the motivation to succeed in mathematics and statistics. If you're set back by the content of the course or simply need someone to explain how it all relates to the real world, this is where I come in. As a tutor for over 5 years I have worked with students that had math learning disabilities and through my experience I become very versatile in explaining the concepts. Most importantly, the main goal behind the tutoring sessions is to improve the student's approach and way of thinking when working with the problems. If you or your student are having difficulties grasping the concepts in math or statistics classes, contact me. I help student improve their understanding of the material and help them to become independent learners. I break each concept down into simple easy to understand elements and present explanations in step by step format. My sessions are focused on showing you how to simplify the process with strategic approaches for each concept/problem type.

I am good at motivating students to learn and wanting to learn more. I make learning fun by making things easy to understand and by making it fun for students. They not only remember well but they learn to apply and think for themselves. I also emphasize value in learning new words and improving vocabulary. Words are conduit for knowledge, and knowledge is power. So words are power. All these skills translate in to two things, improved selfesteem, and success. I charge $50.00 Per Hour for college students.

Steve - COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY Profile
Tutoring - SATs / Regents / AP / College Counseling - COLUMBIA Student
Hi,
I am a Columbia University student and professional tutor with several years' experience. I tutor in NYC and Long Island. If you're not in the New York Metro area, I can tutor by email, AIM and phone.
I have had extensive experience tutoring for the SATs and SATIIs and scored an 800 on the SATII Writing, which is now the SAT Writing section. Don't waste your time and money on a course when I can work with you one-on-one to get closer to that perfect score.
I also tutor for Regents and Advanced Placement (AP) Exams in Math, Science, English and History as well as the SHSAT, the NYC high school entrance exam.
If you are interested in dedicated, top-quality tutoring for school or enrichment in any subject in elementary school through high school, or for standardized tests, please contact me.
I work on a long-term basis for students who need continued support to improve grades, study habits, and SAT scores. I also work on a short-term basis to help students catch up, or to help with test prep and finals.
Another service I provide is college counseling. I can help you with choosing a college, choosing the topic for and writing your college essays, picking and highlighting which extracurriculars to promote on your college applications, designing a resume to include with your application and preparing for the college interview. I also do EDITING work, so I can help you with your college essay if you've already written a draft.

I am a caring teacher with excellent communication and teaching skills. I am currently a second year medical student at UCI school of medicine and have graduated with honors from UCLA with a BS in Biology. I have over 7 years of experience in tutoring. Subjects I tutor are: Calculus, Algebra (all levels), Geometry, basic math, Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. I usually like to meet with the students for a free 15 minute consultation to learn about their goals, their weakness in the subject they need help with, and to discuss my lesson plans. I take the responsibility for providing students with a better understanding in the subject at hand and to enhance the student s study skills.
My fee varies from $20-$60 and it depends on: how many students in each session, the subject, and the need of the student. I also do small group tutoring that usually benefits the students financially.

Welcome Parents and Students!
As a parent, I am proud to offer my experience so your child can find greater success in his or her classes and, more importantly, gain confidence in her or his abilities.
As an enthusiastic learner I want my students to believe in themselves......to get excited......to believe science and math are important for their future and EXCEL. I am very interested in creating a combination of one-on-one tutoring with on line support for my students so we can communicate frequently without having to coordinate a specific meeting place. This enables the student to receive extra support on mornings or evenings between tutoring sessions. I can provide on line help for half the rate I must charge if I drive to meet students.

Hello,
I worked as a high school science teacher for 4 years and worked as a college level science tutor for 2 years. I have a broad range of scientific knowledge and strategies to help you really understand science. I like to help students make mental movies of scientific processes so when you need to recall or apply a new concept to that process you will have a clear and deep understanding of how it works.
My greatest asset as a teacher and tutor is that when I went through school I really struggled to get the basics. I feel that the experience has helped my teaching practice. I understand how science can be difficult and I have found ways to make it more manageable.
My students describe me as helpful, fun, and patient. I am sure I can help you have a better understanding of the scientific world.
I hope to talk to you soon.

A little about myself
Im 25, and I have a BS in Environmental Science (Biology focus), with a minor in Honors Interdisciplinary Studies. I am in the Masters program for Environmental Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, but have deferred for maternity leave (I have an 8 month old daughter). Ive studied abroad in Europe. Obviously I like science and math (hence the science and engineering pursuits), but I have a deep and abiding love of the humanities. I read extensively, and writing is one of my strongest abilities.
Tutoring philosophy
I have 3 years of tutoring experience (ages 6-12, and some college age). I believe that every child learns differently, and that if he/she is having trouble with a task or subject, that it simply needs to be presented differently. I am very patient, kind, and firm.

Having graduated in the not too distant past, currently, I work as a research chemist for a nationally recognized company. I have several years experience guiding middle school through college-level students toward their utmost potential in all subject areas.
I combine a traditional tutoring style (helping with homework and reviewing lecture notes) with a very untraditional approach in that I will challenge your student to think at a higher level by providing supplementary information and materials, posing questions that require more than simply regurgitating facts, and teaching them how to study rather than what to study.

Denise Neto Profile
I have been a personal tutor for over 15 years. What makes me different?
**I am not a teacher, but I believe this is actually an asset. My angle in helping students learn is different than teachers as I dont teach like a teacher, but instead I help them understand what the teacher is trying to teach them in the classroom.
**I am young.. Although I state I have been a tutor for over 15 years, I actually started tutoring in high school. Here is a brief glimpse of my tutoring history:
1991 - 1993 - Tutored fellow classmates and underclassmen in spanish. Selected by my teachers and paid by the board of education.
1993 - 1997 - Attended the University of Scranton where I received a BS in Biology with a minor in Spanish. For all four years, I was employed by university's tutoring center and tutored underclassmen in all of the sciences.
1997 - 2000 - Employed by the Princeton Review. I went through intensive training and was certified to teach SAT Math / SAT Verbal / SAT II Biology / SAT II Chemistry / SAT II Physics / SAT Math IC and IIC / SAT Writing. For three years I taught classes of 16-20 students and was site director for course locations up to 80 students. I also quickly became a premier tutor based on my high evaluation scores from parents and students.
2001 - Present - I have received enough personal tutoring referrals that I have been privately tutoring SAT Math/Verbal/Biology/Chemistry and tutoring high school students in all maths and sciences.
*On top of this tutoring/teaching history, since 1994 I have also been an American Red Cross Instructor and since 1999 I have been an Instructor Trainer, which is an individual that trains other to be instructors. I have worked full-time in the Red Cross education capacity for nine years.
*I can provide personal references. Who are these individuals? - parents and students that I have worked with for short periods of time and long periods of time.
*I have a proven track record of increasing SAT scores 100-400 points, depending upon the student and their current scoring level. I believe that with a change in the way a student thinks, they can follow through in believing that they can conquer the SAT.
Please contact me to discuss possibilities for your son or daughter. Even if you want to just chat about their upcoming school year and how our schedules would work together or what I would recommend. I am open to tutoring academic subjects or SAT prep. Tutoring does not have to be on a weekly basis, but can be on a as-needed basis. I do travel to your home or we can make arrangements for tutoring at a local library.
I look forward to helping your child improve their grades / scores. As a final note, my prices are reasonable and you can pay by the hour, or pre-pay for a set amount of hours at a slightly reduced cost.

I am interested in seeking a part time tutoring position in science, mathematics or engineering. I have always been interested in helping others, especially when it comes to academics as I have always been blessed in that a strong grasp over science and math subjects has come easy to me and I want to help others who might not have as strong a hold over the subjects. I have plenty of experience in the subject areas of K-12 mathematics as well as college level advanced mathematics such as linear algebra and differential equations. I am well versed in K-12 physics as well as most K-12 levels of biology and chemistry and other sciences. Additionally I am a seasoned user of Microsoft office applications as well as Matlab and Solidworks and can teach basic computer skills as well as skills in the programs just mentioned. I am an alumnus of the California Institute of Technology where I studied Aeronautical Engineering meaning I am well qualified to also tutor in engineering courses such as thermodynamics, fluid and gas dynamics, statics and dynamics, solid mechanics and so on. I am also planning on attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2007 to study for my PhD in Aeronautical Engineering. I am hoping to obtain a position tutoring in one of the fields described above or a related field. I have experience tutoring in high school as well as in college and am an extremely patient and personable tutor. I have no past criminal infractions and am drug free. I am available after 6 every day as well as on weekends. I would need a flexible schedule to accommodate the fact that my day schedule can very depending on the load of work we have at a given time. I hope that you will consider hiring me as a tutor at your company as I feel I can greatly contribute to successfully furthering the education of children and adults in the area.
