Kevin "Cal" Neal Profile
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile. THE INFECTIOUS LOVE OF LEARNING The single most important thing that you can do in selecting a tutor is to get one who is passionate about learning, passionate about teaching, and passionate about the subject matter. That passion is contagious, and when the student realizes how interesting even the driest of subjects can be, then they are typically more interested in committing to the consistent hard work that it sometimes takes to succeed. THE MAGIC OF MUSIC I primarily teach music - drums and percussion - but as you can see below I also tutor a variety of other subjects. My background as a musician includes over 25 years of playing experience on drum set, 15 years of orchestral playing, and another 10 years of marching performance. My music teaching experience includes both private lessons as well as group instruction (drum lines, orchestral ensembles), and includes most recently being selected by the Dean of the Los Angeles Music Academy to tutor for Harmony/Theory/Ear Training, and for Hand Percussion, working with both individuals and small groups (4-6 people). I also have training and experience in recording using several popular DAW software packages, including Pro Tools, and served as a student assistant in the Academy studio. I help recording students set up their own home studio areas, getting mics and channels sorted out, how to apply effects, and get great sounds from the get go. For more information on my musical experience and the lessons I teach, please visit: www.learningmusician.com/kcal71 OF TECHNICAL THINGS Success in my previous career as a civil engineer required a strong background in mathematics and various physical sciences. My experience tutoring my peers while in college and graduate school prepared me to tutor today both college-bound high school and home school students, as well as those students already entrenched in college-level studies. In my work as an engineer, I developed a strong skill set in Excel and Word, including programming custom macros in Visual Basic. I taught a series of workshops in Excel for coworkers, helping them increase their own productivity, and was the resident expert for these software programs at several companies I worked for. I can assist you with your next spreadsheet or word processing task, and show you some tricks to help boost your productivity. SPEAKING YOUR MIND I think that to be able to show that you have mastered a subject, or at least are making progress, then you need to be able to communicate yourself effectively. I have decades of experience drafting technical reports, analytical and persuasive essays (some scholarship award winners, I might add!), cover letters and resumes. I also have had to develop techniques for documenting calculations in the technical subjects so that my calculations could be more easily checked and corrected. These critical skills are often the deciding factors in who gets accepted to selective schools, who secures scholarship funding, who gets the best grades, even who is the best candidate for a job, and are ones that I enjoy coaching students on. FEE SCHEDULE I teach out of students' homes from Tacoma to Seattle, at a rate of $40 an hour, or I can teach you at my home in Lacey (near Olympia) at a lower rate of $30 an hour. Half-hour music lessons for young folks are available at $20 a half-hour.

Stefano Campagna Profile
Background: After several years in this line of work, I have tutored toddlers, middle-aged adults, and every age group in between those two extremes with ever-increasing success. I really enjoy tutoring as it is a flexible, part-time job that allows me to help many students grasp the material they are just learning at school or reviewing for the first time in years. Although I had only started working with established organizations in the past 6 years, I have tutored students privately on my own since I was in high school. My interests are in mathematics and the sciences, but I also engage students that have trouble reading, writing, and even, speaking English. I also am native Spanish speaker, so I have had the opportunity to help many students through a high school or college level sequence of Spanish. The progress and rapport I have developed with my students has been independent of whether the student was struggling in class, simply needed to practice problem-solving or conversational skills, or needed to review for Advanced Placement Exams. Regardless of a students initial stance, once I am aware the material that needs to be covered, I am able to customize individual lessons around the students needs. Sample: For example, when I work with students in math, chemistry, or physics problems, I first review the theory in order for them to grasp what objects we are studying. Simply plugging in to formulas means nothing if you do not know what their purpose is. When possible, I want students to appreciate the material for the sake of acquiring new knowledge prior to delving deeper into the subject. Then, after working out several examples either from the book, lecture notes, or my own experience, we would tackle larger assignments or go over previous test results. I occasionally give extra problems for them to work for future sessions, and we would go over these at our earliest convenience. I also tend to present students with different ways of visualizing problems, with drawn-out, symbolic, or more abstract examples. Notice: As a side note, some students have a hard time realizing that a noticeable improvement may take more time and effort than what they originally wanted to commit. I keep reminding these students that practice and dedication will reward them in the end and that initial frustration is normal. They need encouragement and motivation, but they also need to work harder to reach their goals. Others actually do not need to be tutored for as long or often as they planned because all they needed was some guidance or a refresher before an exam. These students are sometimes blessings because their improvement is obvious after the first couple of lessons. Schedule: At this point, I would like to mention my main reservations with tutoring. As a full-time graduate student, my schedule currently permits only private tutoring work from Friday to Sunday. Although day-by-day exceptions may arise, I am generally not available to tutor during the week as my own schoolwork takes a considerable amount of time. When I tutor privately, I normally have to drive to a students residence, and between driving, traffic delays and anomalies, and parking, I may lose up to three hours of time just to arrive at my destination to tutor for 30 minutes. I have had parents schedule last minute sessions for next day exams, even late at night, but I advise against that. I prefer working on a regular weekly, or biweekly, schedule with each student and have at least a ninety minute buffer to reach my next student. Given individual circumstances and my own changing schedule, I am very willing to have flexible meeting times on given days. That being said, I would prefer a 24 hour notice of whether a session needs to be cancelled or rescheduled for later in the week. I have had to charge my full hour fee for frequent last minute cancellations that cost me several trips. Conclusion: I am willing to travel to Weschester County, western Long Island, and any of the 5 boroughs of NYC. Below I have provided my relevant professional experience working with both schools and large tutoring companies. Please feel free to contact me for more information. Alex Stein Profile
As a certified professional tutor and UCONN graduate with a BS in Physiology and a BA in philosophy, I have 7 years and 5,000 hours of experience tutoring and teaching students of all ages and cultures, attending schools such as public grade schools, Gateway Community College, SCSU, UCONN, Yale University, and Choate Rosemary Hall. Tutoring elementary school students means making learning fun and interesting in order to cultivate a life-long passion for learning. Middle school students are a favorite to tutor. At that age, students learn about themselves and start to think about possible vocations. So, tutoring these students doesn't just mean restating seemingly useless information. It's about character building, sharing wisdom, and allowing them to feel comfortable and passionate about learning. I enjoy tutoring High School students by developing their critical thinking skills (necessary for success in college). Finally, I have always excelled with the rigorous demands of college courses and always have loved sharing my practical guidance and quick tips to current college students. Because teaching is a passion for me, I make learning fun, enjoyable, and practical. I love seeing personal and academic growth in my students. If all you want is to pass your next exam or course, then I love making these students less stressful and more successful. My favorite subject to tutor: Organic Chemistry!

At Open Door Tutoring, teenagers are empowered in their development into responsible young adults. While confronting a looming textbook, they discover and develop internal skills that will serve them later in life. With unconditional positive regard toward their feelings, they can learn to keep going even when they feel excruciatingly bored. When a textbook is poorly written, or the work causes frustration, we complain or laugh together while continuing forward. Thus, they develop: fortitude, resilience, persistence, competence, and pride in a job well done. They learn that on the road to success, there is no substitute for good, hard effort. A harmonious mixture of academic knowledge plus keen listening and communication skills is the key to Open Door Tutoring success.

Sandy Eulitt Profile
You know, there are a lot of great tutors out there, and every one of them will tell you that they'll get you great grades, that they're the best, that they have great customer service, etc., all of which I am sure is true. What I don't think all of them will tell you is how a great tutor uses the student's every day life, hobbies, sports, and activities to make a math or physics problem more relevant, or how a tutor can demonstrate the use of chemistry in the course of a normal day, and thus make a sometimes arcane subject much more meaningful. In the wake of the Chelsea King and Amber Dubois murders, I think the most important thing someone looks for in a tutor is someone with whom they feel safe, and, in the case of a parent, someone with whom they would never question leaving their child with. My rule is that when the student is with me, I'm the guardian ad litum. Meaning, that child is my primary responsibility until the parent shows back up. We meet in public places, I'm happy to have a background check done, and kids go from my sight to their parent's sight. I've intervened when a questionable man started chatting up my 15 year old female physics student, and told him to leave her alone or I'd have security remove him. I also have helped diagnose medical problems. On several occassions, I've brought to the attention of parents prospective learning difficulties, including ADD and ADHD. In one very special case, the ADD had gone unnoticed by teachers, parents, and counselors for several years, but after just a few sessions with me, I knew something was wrong. the girl was tested over Christmas break, put on medication, a report was given to me by her doctor about strategies I should use to teach her, and sure enough, her grades went from struggling to get D's to nearly an A (she's about 2 points shy right now). In another case, a girl already on ADD medication had a bad reaction one day. She saw a bright flash of light, had heart palpitations, started shaking, and went white as a sheet, with no warning whatsoever. I handled it. Mom happened to be shopping nearby, so came back, we got the girl to the car, and she went to the ER. She'd been overmedicated and too much caffeine. Now we know that that medication cannot be combined with caffeine, and she has been reevaluated b/c of what happened with me, and her medication changed. This is the kind of person I am. Yeah, I'll get you great grades, make you laugh, reward you, and use your life to make the subjects more understandable. But I'll also take care of you, and make sure that you are safe, and that if anything seems out of the ordinary, you are in the very best possible hands, outside of your own parents.

Hi! Are you seeking compassionate flexible assistance from a thoroughly experienced instructor? Maybe we're a good match for each other... Here's a little about me. I enjoy working with people and I love the simple beauty of mathematics and most of all I enjoy connecting with my students to find the most efficient road to subject mastery. My teaching style is flexible, clear, gentle, and encouraging. I have over 10,000 hours of private and small group tutoring experience, and also have classroom experience teaching Advanced Algebra, Physics and Trig/PreCalculus at a great local private school in Jackson, Wyoming. I am in Maine long-term, and I would love to assist you in meeting your math achievement goals today. I began tutoring some of my classmates in advanced algebra when I was 15 years old, continuing to tutor as a side job while I studied Astrophysics at the University of Colorado in Boulder and also after moving to Jackson, Wyoming in 1999. In Jackson, I started a family and chose to tutor full time for the flexibility and fulfillment and quickly found myself with more students than I could handle alone. I founded a full-service tutoring center in Jackson several months after deciding to tutor full time on my own. For 8 years, I employed a team of 5-7 tutors and we served students of all ages in all subject areas while I focused on middle, high school, and college level math and science, standardized test preparation, and academic coaching to develop long term academic confidence and positive motivation in adolescents. I've helped "math haters" go on to choose PreMed, and "hopeless in math" students receive A+s on College Algebra finals. Thanks for visiting! Let me know what I can do for you , and I will look forward to assisting you in achieving your academic goals with confidence and enjoyment! Aubrey J.

I have always enjoyed tutoring, and my students have as well! My teaching is based on guiding students towards self-discovery and good study habits with only slight assistance in order to prepare them for working by themselves. However, I try my hardest to make the process fun and enjoyable for each student. At my age I believe students will be more comfortable and free to discuss their concerns. Ms Jacalyn Nosek Profile
I have been tutoring professionally for more than 25 years. I have a teaching background that includes junior high school, high school, and college. In addition to the subjects listed above, i also teach study, organizational, and planning skills and writing skills. My educational background is in behavior biology, which means I have a different approach to learning. I look at learning as a physiological process involving sensory and motor nerves. Because of my background, I teach students using lots of color, diagrams, outlines, and other tools that make learning more natural and accomplished with less effort. I teach students to use all of their senses so that information is stored in multiple areas of the brain and then practice retrieval of the information until it is stored in both their short term and long term memories. I love learning and I love teaching and I believe both should be enjoyable. The techniques I use have had great success with my students. My goal is always to empower my students with the skills they need to be in control of their lives. Every academic area I teach is also infused with study and organizational skills. I teach students how to take big or small projects and break them down into a manageable set of progressive steps with self-imposed deadlines that keep them ahead of their class. When kids are in control of what is happening at school their self-confidence and attitude soar. Kids don't have to be scared and feeling hopeless, they can be successful and even leaders. My students go from C's, D's, and even F's to A's and B's. The first thing I do is diagnose the problem(s),learn how the student processes information, what's missing in his/her background, and what his/her teacher's expectations are for that class. Then I can create a plan of action that quickly produces positive results and gets the student into a pattern of growth and success. It's my job to teach each student in a "language" that they understand. I can explain concepts from many different directions. My broad and long experience has also taught me how and where students will make mistakes and go astray. I have tools and methods that help them avoid those problem areas. Teaching is my passion and gift. Whether it is math, science, social studies, study & organizational skills, or writing, if your son or daughter is ready to try some new approaches, I can help him/her succeed.

Your work with him raised his test scores substantially, and undoubtedly contributed to his being offered a merit scholarship at his prep school of choice. I am very happy to have been recommenced to you, and would enthusiastically recommend you to others in turn. Sincerely Brian Clayman Hi my name is Ira. Adelle helped me immensely in my college biology course. I was having a hard time at first when I took it during the year. Then, last summer I retook the course and I got an A thanks to Adelle. She is a very knowledgeable, patient and helpful tutor. I felt like I was actually learning the material that seemed incredibly difficult before. If you need someone to teach you science look no further than Adelle. Adelle tutored my daughter in English for the ACT for a very short period of time and her score improved 7 points (equal to about a 140 point jump on the SAT)! I would wholeheartedly recommend Adelle as a tutor. She is thoroughly familiar with the subject matter, targets the student's weaknesses, is a great motivator and GETS RESULTS! I am so pleased with Adelle, that I plan to have her tutor my daughter in college level math over the summer. Sincerely, Patricia Coster "In the summer of 2007, Ms. Cadogan tutored me for my Chemistry Regents. With Ms. Cadogan help, my score when from 50's to 80. " Margaret Panayiotou Thank you so much for tutoring our daughter who failed the Math B regents in school. She had to take a retest during the summer and we needed your help. Even though you only spent 3 two hour days with her, your patience and teaching technique really paid off. We are happy to say she passed with a 75 and I am sure if she spent more time with you the grade would have been higher. Thank you again for everything that you have done. I have a Master's degree in Mechanical Enginnering and work part time as a tutor.Currently work as consultant for engineering firms and am planning to pursue PHD to teach full time in future. I would like to use the practical knowledge I gained during Master's as a Resident Tutor and combine it with engineering skills to make studying fun for you/ your child. During my high school I realised its just not getting home work done or acing in grades , but its is the concept that really helps a student cross the barrier of Fear in any subject. Memorizing formulas would help you get better scores but would never help you excel the subject without proper understanding of the logic and concept and gain selfconfidence. Brittany Porter Profile
Hi! My name is Brittany and I'm an aspiring writer and educator who's just officially moved to NYC. I graduated from a liberal arts college this year, with a completed publish-worthy Honors thesis (on ADHD, its history and quasi-neurology). I love to teach have many years of tutoring and teaching experience, both formal and informal. I've worked as a teaching assistant for four high-need high school classes, and this year Im working toward my secondary certification. If you're looking for someone patient, down-to-Earth, funny (but down-to-*business when we need to be), who can put you at ease with the material, look no further. I am comfortable and have ample experience with kids of all ages, from 2 to 92, from your second-grade child who needs a boost with her reading to the high schooler whose trigonometry just ain't sticking, to the adult nursing student who needs help with orgo. I would also be glad to help with writing and editing papers and conducting basic academic research (MLA anyone?). I love working with LD folks (I think of us as quirky learners more than disabled ones&), or just taking anyone who's feeling frustrated and overwhelmed and bringing it all down to size for them. At the risk of sounding like a jack-of-all-trades, I'll say that I have comfort and experience with the following subjects, should you need assistance with any (or all?) of them: * MATH: All levels through pre-calculus: basic arithmetic, ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY, TRIGONOMETRY/PRE-CALC, (I'm re-teaching myself Calculus now, so I make no guarantees with calculus proper.) Also well-versed in basic STATISTICS: Excel, number-crunching, theory, experimental design and set-up, etc. * SCIENCES: My specialty is BIOLOGY, especially genetics, neuroscience, evolution and ecology. But if you're struggling with ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, you really should come see me: it is one of my favorite subjects to tutor precisely because I believe it's taught so badly most of the time (hint: orgo is not at ALL about memorization!!). I'm also comfortable with the intro chem curriculum, but please look elsewhere for physics as my background there is scanty. * WRITING/English/Editing: I'm a poet, linguist, and essayist in my spare time, and one with a deft editor's touch. I would love the opportunity to help folks with their writing, as despite my gifts as a writer I know what a hell writing issues can be. Even the most arcane, technical academic writing can feel like delicate subjective stuff. When I look at others' writing however, I see it in a very different light: I clarify structure, syntax, and phrasing with ease and efficacy. No matter where you're at, I'd be happy to assist. * BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE SPANISH: Should you need a native speaker for advanced or really intensive work, I'm not it. I'm only semi-fluent, and very rusty with my vocab after lots of years. What I offer for the introductory students among you is a keen ear for pronunciation (Native speakers point it out) and a firm grasp of Spanish flow, conjugation and syntax: I get how the language works and can 'translate' it for you. Oftentimes native speakers or those that are fluent (unless they also happen to be great teachers) can't break things down for a beginner the way that I can, because it's harder for them to 'go back' to where you're at. I've helped dozens of my classmates pass their Spanish classes... or just understand that one grammatical thing they didn't get. This is because I am also a grammar geek and can cogently explain, for instance, transitive and intransitive verbs (ie., why we need those los and las after certain verbs, which to us native English speakers sound so out of place, and why this is only one role the --los and --las can play.) I also have you practice what we do outloud, right there, so it starts to roll off your tongue, too. * TEST-PREP (SAT's, ACT, Regents, GRE, subject tests&): I hate standardized tests as much as you do. But I do well on them, I 'get' their logic (even if it's a stupid logic) and I hold no secrets sacred. I scored a 1480 on my SAT's (back when the max score was 1600), six years ago. I'm available immediately, for summer finals or brush-up before Fall. September/October scheduling welcome, too! I'm flexible as to location and am willing to come meet you wherever you are most comfortable: your home, your school, local library, this great café you love, whereverbut our initial meeting should be somewhere public. I'd also prefer to stay within Brooklyn or Manhattan; anywhere far out of the way will come with stark conditions. My rate is $30 an hour. Negotiable ($20-25) if you want to schedule more than two hours a week, or if you are a single/struggling parent going back to school, because that means you rock. Block meeting times (ie., 4-6 hours in one shot) could also qualify for a discount, if that's how you roll. Can't wait to hear from you, and GOOD LUCK with your studies!!

A private tutor can provide you with the motivation to succeed in mathematics and statistics. If you're set back by the content of the course or simply need someone to explain how it all relates to the real world, this is where I come in. As a tutor for over 5 years I have worked with students that had math learning disabilities and through my experience I become very versatile in explaining the concepts. Most importantly, the main goal behind the tutoring sessions is to improve the student's approach and way of thinking when working with the problems. If you or your student are having difficulties grasping the concepts in math or statistics classes, contact me. I help student improve their understanding of the material and help them to become independent learners. I break each concept down into simple easy to understand elements and present explanations in step by step format. My sessions are focused on showing you how to simplify the process with strategic approaches for each concept/problem type.

Whether it be carrying out basic arithmetics or solving differential equations, analyzing simple force diagrams or using the Schrodinger equation for a 3-D quantum mechanical system, understanding the states of matter or following complex chemical reaction mechanisms, I am here to help you. Whether you need to refresh the basics or you are looking for something more rigorous, you have found the right person. Currently a student standing at the top 3% of my class and tutoring at the Academic Development Center at Boston College, I have the required knowledge and experience to deal with my students' needs. I believe that teaching can be a fun and fulfilling experience for both the student and the tutor, and that positive attitude can lead to excellence. My method highlights grasping the concepts rather than blind memorization. However, the only way to learn long division or carrying out nasty integrals is to sit down and do them. I cannot promise that I will be able to teach you everything, but at least I will teach you how to learn. Very easy-going, flexible, charges negotiable.
