STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Teaching is really my passion. I feel this teaching passion can best find fruition in an urban setting. Students in an urban environment reflect those that have been forced to experience practical life experiences early in their lives and those that are struggling with lack of an economic advantage. Both of these student groups will benefit from a teacher who has a blend of experiences in real life and is fairly academically grounded. These types of students will need guidance understanding concepts explained to them within the context of real life. And I have had many real life experiences, which can be readily converted into class situations as part of class work, cases exercises and examples that will support the educational content. This is how I have taught in the past with great success. In other words I thrive in an educational environment that provides the student an education along with life skills which all of them will need as they grow up and face the world. On top of it, I have written a career column in a local ethnic newspaper, which was focused on helping young people understand the practical aspects of work life. I have also conducted College admissions counseling seminars and workshops geared towards high school seniors as they enter college. I know how to relate to young people. The core of my philosophy of education is to inject real life examples and stories as much as possible – relate the material to every day life. Whatever theory or concept is being taught, it needs to be peppered with actual, practical examples so that the concept being explain comes alive. I am uniquely positioned to do this because over the last thirty eight years I have been there, done it and seen it I am a passionate teacher whose sole desire is to motivate all students to reach the truest extent of their potential. This I learnt from my father who taught in India for over fifty years. My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that educational institutions should concentrate on their core focus – the students – and creatively dedicate themselves to enhancing educational standards within the practical constraints of financial and political realities. For standardized tests the strategies I teach are not taught in school, nor should they be taught, because the way you study for a history or biology test is very different from the way you study for a standardized test. With my test prep, you will learn: * How to answer reading comprehension questions without reading an entire passage * How to decipher one and two-blank sentence completion questions when the answers are words you've never seen * How many questions to skip and still achieve your target score * How to use timing to your advantage * What elements must go into an SAT essay to score a 6 instead of a 2 * Effective methods for increasing your vocabulary skills without memorizing huge word lists These strategies can sometimes be different for male and female students. The recent revision of the SAT was due in part to the prevailing "gender gap," wherein girls have traditionally scored lower than boys on the test. Although early data shows the gap has probably narrowed, there are still definable testing patterns among many male and female students that require different approaches to tutoring. Be sure any tutor you choose has a plan to address the "gender gap." EVERY student can improve his or her standardized test taking skills. You can do it using prep books, of which there are many. I am very patient and kind when it comes to learning a musical instrument because I know it is a difficult process. Most of my experience with tutoring is with non-native English speakers. I helped a woman write her masters thesis while at UO and have worked with Japanese exchange students' English papers. I am interested in helping others out in their quest to improve their English oral and writing skills. I am willing to meet for half hour or hour long sessions. The price I have up there is certainly not fixed. I realize it depends on multiple factors (i.e. my experience in the field I'm tutoring in, how long the session is, how often we meet, etc).
