THE INFECTIOUS LOVE OF LEARNING The single most important thing that you can do in selecting a tutor is to get one who is passionate about learning, passionate about teaching, and passionate about the subject matter. That passion is contagious, and when the student realizes how interesting even the driest of subjects can be, then they are typically more interested in committing to the consistent hard work that it sometimes takes to succeed. THE MAGIC OF MUSIC I primarily teach music - drums and percussion - but as you can see below I also tutor a variety of other subjects. My background as a musician includes over 25 years of playing experience on drum set, 15 years of orchestral playing, and another 10 years of marching performance. My music teaching experience includes both private lessons as well as group instruction (drum lines, orchestral ensembles), and includes most recently being selected by the Dean of the Los Angeles Music Academy to tutor for Harmony/Theory/Ear Training, and for Hand Percussion, working with both individuals and small groups (4-6 people). My experience tutoring my peers while in college and graduate school prepared me to tutor today both college-bound high school and home school students, as well as those students already entrenched in college-level studies. In my work as an engineer, I developed a strong skill set in Excel and Word, including programming custom macros in Visual Basic. I taught a series of workshops in Excel for coworkers, helping them increase their own productivity, and was the resident expert for these software programs at several companies I worked for. I can assist you with your next spreadsheet or word processing task, and show you some tricks to help boost your productivity. SPEAKING YOUR MIND I think that to be able to show that you have mastered a subject, or at least are making progress, then you need to be able to communicate yourself effectively. I have decades of experience drafting technical reports, analytical and persuasive essays (some scholarship award winners, I might add!), cover letters and resumes. I also have had to develop techniques for documenting calculations in the technical subjects so that my calculations could be more easily checked and corrected. These critical skills are often the deciding factors in who gets accepted to selective schools, who secures scholarship funding, who gets the best grades, even who is the best candidate for a job, and are ones that I enjoy coaching students on. STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Teaching is really my passion. I feel this teaching passion can best find fruition in an urban setting. Students in an urban environment reflect those that have been forced to experience practical life experiences early in their lives and those that are struggling with lack of an economic advantage. Both of these student groups will benefit from a teacher who has a blend of experiences in real life and is fairly academically grounded. These types of students will need guidance understanding concepts explained to them within the context of real life. And I have had many real life experiences, which can be readily converted into class situations as part of class work, cases exercises and examples that will support the educational content. This is how I have taught in the past with great success. In other words I thrive in an educational environment that provides the student an education along with life skills which all of them will need as they grow up and face the world. On top of it, I have written a career column in a local ethnic newspaper, which was focused on helping young people understand the practical aspects of work life. I have also conducted College admissions counseling seminars and workshops geared towards high school seniors as they enter college. I know how to relate to young people. The core of my philosophy of education is to inject real life examples and stories as much as possible – relate the material to every day life. Whatever theory or concept is being taught, it needs to be peppered with actual, practical examples so that the concept being explain comes alive. I am uniquely positioned to do this because over the last thirty eight years I have been there, done it and seen it I am a passionate teacher whose sole desire is to motivate all students to reach the truest extent of their potential. This I learnt from my father who taught in India for over fifty years. My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that educational institutions should concentrate on their core focus – the students – and creatively dedicate themselves to enhancing educational standards within the practical constraints of financial and political realities. Creativity, enthusiasm, dedication and a positive “can do” attitude will do the trick and create educational “magic” in the classroom.
