Kevin "Cal" Neal Profile
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile. THE INFECTIOUS LOVE OF LEARNING The single most important thing that you can do in selecting a tutor is to get one who is passionate about learning, passionate about teaching, and passionate about the subject matter. That passion is contagious, and when the student realizes how interesting even the driest of subjects can be, then they are typically more interested in committing to the consistent hard work that it sometimes takes to succeed. THE MAGIC OF MUSIC I primarily teach music - drums and percussion - but as you can see below I also tutor a variety of other subjects. My background as a musician includes over 25 years of playing experience on drum set, 15 years of orchestral playing, and another 10 years of marching performance. My music teaching experience includes both private lessons as well as group instruction (drum lines, orchestral ensembles), and includes most recently being selected by the Dean of the Los Angeles Music Academy to tutor for Harmony/Theory/Ear Training, and for Hand Percussion, working with both individuals and small groups (4-6 people). I also have training and experience in recording using several popular DAW software packages, including Pro Tools, and served as a student assistant in the Academy studio. I help recording students set up their own home studio areas, getting mics and channels sorted out, how to apply effects, and get great sounds from the get go. For more information on my musical experience and the lessons I teach, please visit: www.learningmusician.com/kcal71 OF TECHNICAL THINGS Success in my previous career as a civil engineer required a strong background in mathematics and various physical sciences. My experience tutoring my peers while in college and graduate school prepared me to tutor today both college-bound high school and home school students, as well as those students already entrenched in college-level studies. In my work as an engineer, I developed a strong skill set in Excel and Word, including programming custom macros in Visual Basic. I taught a series of workshops in Excel for coworkers, helping them increase their own productivity, and was the resident expert for these software programs at several companies I worked for. I can assist you with your next spreadsheet or word processing task, and show you some tricks to help boost your productivity. SPEAKING YOUR MIND I think that to be able to show that you have mastered a subject, or at least are making progress, then you need to be able to communicate yourself effectively. I have decades of experience drafting technical reports, analytical and persuasive essays (some scholarship award winners, I might add!), cover letters and resumes. I also have had to develop techniques for documenting calculations in the technical subjects so that my calculations could be more easily checked and corrected. These critical skills are often the deciding factors in who gets accepted to selective schools, who secures scholarship funding, who gets the best grades, even who is the best candidate for a job, and are ones that I enjoy coaching students on. FEE SCHEDULE I teach out of students' homes from Tacoma to Seattle, at a rate of $40 an hour, or I can teach you at my home in Lacey (near Olympia) at a lower rate of $30 an hour. Half-hour music lessons for young folks are available at $20 a half-hour.

I am an experienced tutor for learners of all ages. I am a state certified teacher, and hold an American Montessori Society teaching credential. I have spent the past 15 years teaching and tutoring students (elem to adults) in a variety of settings. In my tutoring, I use many hands-on manipulative materials. I often use Montessori materials with students (even those who have never experienced Montessori education before) because of their amazing capacity to help students - no matter how old to really UNDERSTAND the concepts, rather than just memorizing the steps to get the answer the way that textbooks (and many tutors) often teach. Tutoring Available In: * MATH: elem through geometry and algebra 2 (at any age) * LANGUAGE: all levels/ages: grammar, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary * TEST PREP: test-taking strategies, SAT, ACT, FCAT, ASVAB, GED, FTCE and others * SCIENCE / SOCIAL STUDIES: all elem and middle school subjects, high school biology * SPECIAL NEEDS: dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, autistic spectrum, processing delays, gifted/talented * HOMESCHOOL: academics, enrichment (Curriculum development and learning environment design consulting also available.) * OTHER: study skills, organizational strategies, public speaking I can provide my resume, references, and proof of background check. Christine Maffuccio Profile
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. I am a distinguished teacher and tutor with six years of experience working closely with students of all ages and a wide-array of abilities. I am dedicated to the education of successful and struggling readers and writers, and so I strive to be a clear, patient, and warm tutor. My most extensive experience has been at the college level. At the University of Maryland, I have followed established curricula and designed my own courses. In large and small classes and in one-on-one conferences, I have taught university students close, thoughtful reading and literary analysis; writing about literature; persuasive writing; and rhetoric. I have also worked in the University of Richmond and the University of Maryland University College writing centers. There, I have tutored undergraduate essays in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, too. As a college writing tutor, I have helped students understand assignments, write persuasive arguments, and organize their thoughts; I have also provided feedback on smaller, grammatical and stylistic issues. My other substantial experience comes from the reading development classes that I have taught to students ages 4 through adult. In age-appropriate classes and in one-on-one settings, I have coached reading speed, efficiency, comprehension, concentration, and recall. I have helped students to hone note-taking, composition, and study skills. Additionally, as part of these classes, I have counseled students parents on how to foster a productive learning environment for their children. My time with younger students and their parents has helped me to develop and attitude toward teaching in general -- and toward teaching reading and writing in particular -- that extends beyond the the rigorous curriculum of the university. I account for the full and diverse development of the each English Language Arts scholar, young or not-so-young. My wide range of experience helps me to appreciate where each student has been and where he or she is going. It should not be left unsaid that I am truly excited about language and books. My avid reading and enthusiasm for writing inspired me to declare an English major in college, to finish an English M.A. in graduate school, and now to pursue an English Ph.D. Even while reading and writing have become the central focus of my work days, I often curl up with a new book in my free time. I believe that my sincere appreciation for the English Language Arts cannot help but inspire and motivate my students. I am currently living in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, NY. I spend most of my days writing my dissertation, which is tentatively titled Making English Low: A History of Laureate Poetics, 1399-1625, and which traces the intersection of the early English poet laureateship and early popular culture. I hope to finish by this spring.

I have been teaching at the High School, Intermediate, and college levels since 1971. For the last 15 years, I have been a High School substitute in nearly all subjects. My DoE license and background check are with the Windward District. My Master's Degree is in French. I also teach Spanish, am a published writer in English. I studied Italian at college. I have traveled to 40 foreign countries on 5 continents, and lived 10 months in Europe and Africa. I am a "science junkie," particularly in biological, cosmological, anthropological and genetic fields. I have a solid background in History, Psychology, and even Bookkeeping. I am familiar with computers (primarily Macs.) I have been singing for over 50 years with different choral groups, and was Director of Music in my church. I have also performed in some community plays and musicals. I have studied Music Theory and Composition, although I do not play piano. My philosophy of education is that there must be a foundation of basics on which to build. I always encourage association with familiar knowledge, and believe that all subjects are interconnected in some way. If a student does not grasp a concept through listening, I try to use visual or physical techniques. The student has the primary responsibility for learning. Any effort on the part of the student will be rewarded.
Today, Certifications, WyzAnt requires tutors to pass proficiency exams and have appropriate credentials before they are permitted to tutor a particular subject. Hello to the English learners, I am probably one of the older teachers on this site, but I feel I have the insight to know what works best in the classroom. I truly care about my students' success because I have lived in a foreign country and know firsthand what it feels like to be misunderstood and the level of frustration one faces in simple communication. When I teach, I like to borrow a phrase from President Obama, Yes we can!

A Tutors.org National Private Home Tutoring Network Profile
Our company has been tutoring students in Las Vegas for almost a decade and now provides to-your-door tutoring in several cities. Our tutors can provide a variety of services including: tutoring, assessments, evaluation, mentoring, homework help, study skills, organization, and test preparation. Our online system is completely transparent and allows you to browse through tutor profiles, request services from local prescreened tutors, and manage your account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Best of all, we do background checks and personally interview all our tutors before representing their services. We screen through every completed tutor application and invite less than half to an interview for a personal evaluation and even do skills testing if they list advanced math or science like algebra, geometry, calculus, chemistry, physics, etc. During this second level of quality assurance, we rate our tutors based on education, experience, professionalism, communication skills, teacher status, math ability, energy, love for teaching, and many others. Even after we approve tutors to work with our students, we take many steps to assure they are consistant in providing quality services. We analyze tutor statistics for response times and renewal rates and often communicate with customers to confirm overall satisfaction with their specific tutor. Cameron Holmes Profile
My experiences in college allowed me to gain personal relationships working with children in the system as a Court Appointed Special Advocate while developing a greater appreciation for education and its rewarding effects as an elementary school tutor. I am currently employed as a substitute teacher in the Chicagoland area and I enjoy educating students to the fullest. As a substitute educator, I have the opportunity to reach a vast amount of students as I can work with several different levels of students all in a weeks work. I love teaching fourth graders the multiplication 9s trick and seeing them get excited when they get it, and likewise, I have a personal passion for working with teen students because I am delighted when they talk about their future educational goals and how they plan on reaching them. I tell them higher education has taken me from my menial roots in a single parent home to the Globe Theatre in London. Coming from a foster family, higher education has given me the audacity to transform myself into a person that continually strives for excellence. For my younger students, seeing them grasp challenging concepts that they were once intimidated by makes me feel as though I have made a huge difference with their self-esteem and confidence which is imperative in pursuing their future goals. When I work with students who express their challenges on their educational pursuits, I respond with Yes, I believe you can whatever you put your mind to. Taking that first step to your goals will open up a world full of experiences that will make you appreciate life and its endless opportunities.

Hello! If you are looking for a motivated, intelligent and responsible tutor, look no more.I graduated from Queens College (summa cum laude)in February 2008 majoring in Psychology (with a concentration on education) and Anthropology. During my time in college, I worked as an English and Math tutor for middle and elementary school students. Under my tutelage, one of my students aced the Specialized High School Admission Test and went on to succeed in the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School. During this time, I also tutored some of my fellow college students in Spanish. A native Spanish speaker, I helped my students improve their knowledge of Spanish grammar and their proficiency in conversation. I believe that the most important thing a teacher can pass on to his students is a passion for knowledge and hope to bring about in my students the love I feel for the subjects that I teach.

Dr. Bob Biswas Profile
STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Teaching is really my passion. I feel this teaching passion can best find fruition in an urban setting. Students in an urban environment reflect those that have been forced to experience practical life experiences early in their lives and those that are struggling with lack of an economic advantage. Both of these student groups will benefit from a teacher who has a blend of experiences in real life and is fairly academically grounded. These types of students will need guidance understanding concepts explained to them within the context of real life. And I have had many real life experiences, which can be readily converted into class situations as part of class work, cases exercises and examples that will support the educational content. This is how I have taught in the past with great success. In other words I thrive in an educational environment that provides the student an education along with life skills which all of them will need as they grow up and face the world. On top of it, I have written a career column in a local ethnic newspaper, which was focused on helping young people understand the practical aspects of work life. I have also conducted College admissions counseling seminars and workshops geared towards high school seniors as they enter college. I know how to relate to young people. The core of my philosophy of education is to inject real life examples and stories as much as possible – relate the material to every day life. Whatever theory or concept is being taught, it needs to be peppered with actual, practical examples so that the concept being explain comes alive. I am uniquely positioned to do this because over the last thirty eight years I have been there, done it and seen it I am a passionate teacher whose sole desire is to motivate all students to reach the truest extent of their potential. This I learnt from my father who taught in India for over fifty years. My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that educational institutions should concentrate on their core focus – the students – and creatively dedicate themselves to enhancing educational standards within the practical constraints of financial and political realities. Creativity, enthusiasm, dedication and a positive “can do” attitude will do the trick and create educational “magic” in the classroom. Finally, I am sure you will find that I do possess a wealth of life experiences (including the early death of my only son, who died of a rare genetic disease in his final semester in college), which has made me very sensitive to all types of people with all types of backgrounds. There is no doubt in my mind that because of my many personal experiences, teaching and professional experiences as a consultant and executive, I can be a true mentor to all who cross my path as a teacher. Comments from students Dr. Bob, So I woke up in a cold sweat last night. The reason being is that I just remembered that I forgot to attach my resume to my Career plan paper. I know its late now, but I figured that I would try and squeek it in. If you just wont accept it, thats fine, I know that I tried. I wanted to thank you again for a great semester. I really learned quite a bit from you. It was most enjoyable. I will be in touch in the future, as I hope you stay in touch. We still need to head out to the golf club sometime. Thanks again Dr. Bob, I thank you for your time and a great semester. I really appreciate you stepping in and taking over the class. I feel that I have learned a tremendous amount in such a short amount of time. I also appreciate your willingness to help students outside of class. I will be contacting you shortly to let you know that I have submitted my application to PwC. Thanks again for all your help and have a great vacation. Here is my project. I appreciate that you let me turn it via email. To be honest, your class brought the most insight to the actual real world of business. Like you said when you first came to class, sometimes changes happen, and how you perceive the change is how you look at change. To me, your class was a change in the right direction. Again sorry for the inconvenience. hey Dr. Bob this is DR from your HROB 101 class i sit in front everyday, anyway i was e-mailing you to tell you that i enjoyed your class and learned a lot of information that i will use in the future. i know my test scores weren't the greatest but i don't think that reflects what i learned and i don't really care about grades. anyway i thought i would let you know that in my business career i will keep in touch with you and let you know how i am doing. this career project has really opened my eyes and i think it is an excellent project. anyway i will keep in touch and thanks again. sincerely, DR Thank you Dr. Bob for all your help and support. We enjoy having you as a professor, we have learned so much from you. Hello Dr. Bob, i just wanted to thank you for a good semester. I appreciate your work to actually teach us something. I fell all to often we, students, do get to caught up in what we are doing and lose sight of why we are doing it. Thank you for everything.

Ms. Sandy Profile
Greetings! I am a professional teacher with many years of classroom experience in the elementary grades and at the university level. My success with children, including those who need to catch up and those who are working above grade level, is very satisfying for parents. Many regular students have worked with me for several years in the Arcadia and San Marino area. I give students encouragement, fun, and solid skillbuilding in all subjects, especially English, Writing, Comprehension, test taking, and Elementary Math. My strong sense of humor is a big plus, and my deep love of children gives them the secure feeling that I am always on their side. As we raise grades together and expand their views of the world, we create a strong bond. I prepare special lessons to teach skills that are weak and I stress test-taking improvement. I bring creative thinking into many lessons and use visual activities as much as possible. My testimonials are revealing success stories. For SAT and PSAT preparation, I tutor students privately in all the necessary skills in English and Writing. Many students can raise their scores dramatically after six months of dedicated work. The best plan is to begin at least one year before the first test. These meetings are priced at $50/hour and can be scheduled once or twice per week. The key to great success is a student's strong commitment to learning and enthusiastic attitude about constantly raising the numbers. Because I have been an editor and published writer, I am a valuable resource for ESL adults and college essay writers. I offer proofreading, editing, guidance on content, and "lifesaving" revisions that help people pass courses they might otherwise have failed. I do this online (students can be anywhere) and in the Los Angeles area. I receive many referrals from students who tell their friends about their success after working with me. Please check the testimonials from students who have benefited from my strong instruction.

Ms. Lauren Rosen Profile
I am a graduate of Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science in Communication and a Minor in Spanish Language. I graduated from high school in Orange County, and to improve my skills as an AP student in English and Spanish, began to tutor in these subjects my junior and senior years. I only graduated high school six years ago and from college three years ago, so the educational process is still fresh in my mind! I am patient and cater my tutoring process well to each individual student. I strongly believe that every person learns differently, and tapping into that notion is the key to my success as a tutor. It always makes me happy to see a student improve his/her skills and grades. I am available Saturdays and Sundays, but unfortunately work very long days during the week and am unable to tutor then.
I have experience tutoring elementary, middle and high school level Spanish, English and grammar. I have tutored AP, Honors and college prep students, including AP Spanish and AP English Literature and Language.

Hi! I've been teaching for over 8 years, primarily at the technical college level. I have taught classes preparing adult students for the GED tests. I have taught basic computer literacy skills, Internet, and MS Office to students ranging in age from high school to senior citizens. Additionally I teach writing, grammar, oral/interpersonal communications, and literature courses which are my strongest subjects. My teaching style is student centered. I focus on students demonstrating competency and understanding rather than memorization and recitation. Most of all, I believe learning should be fun, not a chore, and do what I can to make it interesting.

Tom Pheysey Profile
I scored in the 98th percentile on the May, 2008 SAT, with a perfect 800 in Writing (at age 42). A valid question to ask any tutor is "When did you last take a real SAT?" Real, current testing experience makes a difference. For standardized tests the strategies I teach are not taught in school, nor should they be taught, because the way you study for and take a history or biology test is very different from the way you study for and take a standardized test. With my test prep, you will learn: * How to chop overly dense reading comp passages down to size * How to decipher one and two-blank sentence completion questions when the answers are words you've never seen * How to use timing and skipping to your advantage * What elements must go into an SAT essay to score a 6 instead of a 2 * Effective methods for increasing your vocabulary skills without memorizing huge word lists * What the SAT math sections are really testing (it's not always math) * How to see the hidden hints in many math diagrams and equations * Strategies to combat test anxiety EVERY student can improve his or her standardized test taking skills. You can do it using prep books, of which there are many. You can do it with tutoring. The best way is to use both. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
