I started playing guitar at the age of 4, taught by my father and uncle, both professional musicians, and was schooled throughout my life by older musicians at jam sessions, music festival performances, in "old time" dance bands, and the like. I started getting paid for performing when I was 8, playing in a garage band on the South side of Chicago. Most all of my Mentors have passed on, and now I've become the source of oral trtadition and tunes/songs for many young people, and others that are seeking. I've been a regular instructor for workshops at the Wheatland Music Festival, the largest in the state, as well as at Blissfest, Farmfest, and Grinfest to name a few. I've taught large groups as well as having a number of private students that come over here to my home on the Grand River. I generaly teach folks how to play fiddle tunes (melody and rhythm) on guitar, mandolin, or fiddle, and help them build a repertoir so that they can play comfortably in music sessions and jams. I also have students bring in CD's with a favorite song that they'd like to learn. In a hot second, I'll have the chords out of that recording, lay the piece out on paper, and that person will walk out of here playing that favorite song. I also have students come in needing help with tablature or sheet music, and I'll assist them. All lessons come with a cassette tape recorded during our session highlighting specifics of the lesson, and some excersizes that I'll record based on what I feel the musician needs to move forward quickly. I find, and then break bad habits through these excersizes, and consequently things flow a bit smoother. Fluid playing is a result of "economy of motion" and "muscle memory".
