I am a Music Composition major, but I am unofficially double majoring in Media Composition (CSUN won't let students double major in the same department). I have been playing piano for eleven years now and play everything from jazz to classical, rock to ragtime, and pop to showtunes. I have also sang for thirteen years and was classically trained, but i sing a wide variety of genres. I received the highest grade in both music theory classes I took last year and was one of the top students in ear training. In regards to composition, I recently was privileged enough to have one of my orchestra pieces be performed for an audience of 200 at a concert at CSUN. I have also just finished scoring (writing music for) a pilot of a comedy show which has been pitched to Comedy Central. As you can tell music is a major part of my life. I have taught people in the past, mostly friends and family, but now I am moving to the Northridge area and would like the chance to teach others in that area.

MY BACKGROUND: My name is Laura Wardrip, and I'm a 2004 graduate of Azusa Pacific University. I have been teaching piano since 2003 and have a thriving studio of ~45 private students. I took piano lessons for nine years while growing up, and then during part of my time at Azusa Pacific. While my degree is in Child & Family Psychology, I took numerous courses in Music Theory, music technology, musicianship and other music-related courses during my time at APU. In addition to playing piano, I also write my own music, study voice, am involved in musical theatre and various ministries at my church, including the worship band. I teach all levels & ages of students, from age 4 on. I also have experience working with students who have special needs: for a year, I was employed by ABC (Applied Behavior Consultants) as an in-home tutor for children with autism, and currently teach some great students who also have special needs. LESSONS: I teach at various locations in Azusa and Glendora (varies baesd on day and time), including the Glendora Fine Arts Academy. Lessons are once/ week, $20 per 30-minute lesson or $28 per 45-minute lesson. I do some house calls, subject to availability, for an additional fee (determined by distance). DISCOUNTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR: students available for lessons before 2 pm Mon-Fri, homeschool families and/or families with 3 or more piano students. TEACHING METHOD: Lessons focus mainly on sight-reading, theory, ear training and technique. Most beginning students start with the new version of Alfred's Piano method, which integrates various styles of music with fairly classical training. Opportunity for varied repertoire (i.e. jazz, pop, Disney, Broadway, etc.) increases even more as students become more advanced.
