I've taught quite a range of people, from a pre-school aged beginner to an advanced violin teacher coming to me for lessons to fine-tune performance skills. Additionally, I've had a number of students come to me after quitting lessons with other "more seasoned" teachers (with multiple music degrees even up to the doctoral level) because they found these other violin teachers to be quite boring and also failing to produce the desired results. Sadly, having degrees, awards, trophies, and certifications doesn't mean you can play well or teach well (at the risk of sounding conceited, I was outperforming & out-teaching my violin teachers at the age of 14...I mention this NOT to brag, but simply to prove my point that degrees don't really mean much when it comes to playing and teaching REAL music). Grant Gilman is an active violinist, conductor and teacher in New Jersey and the New York Metro area. He is currently teaching with the Garden State Philharmonic Youth Orchestra as String Coach and Chamber Music Director. Mr. Gilman is a recent Graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, having earned his Masters of Music in Orchestral Conducting studying with Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar. Mr. Gilman also earned his Bachelors of Music from Peabody in Violin Peformance studying with Martin Beaver (1st violinist with the Tokyo String Quartet), Misha Rosenker (Associate Professor of Violin at Eastern Washington University and Principal Second Violin of the Des Moines Symphony), and Pamela Frank (world renowned soloist and chamber musician). As a student at Peabody, Mr. Gilman performed with many orchestral and chamber groups as violinist and conductor, including two violin recitals, three chamber music concerts, and many more conducting performances, including the world premiere of "Homecoming..." by George Lam performed with the Peabody Concert Orchestra. In addition to his current teaching with the Garden State Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Mr. Gilman has taught private lessons for eight years and taught violin, chamber music, music history, and music theory with the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio Summer String Camp for three consecutive summers.
