*** Steve Schwartz - Columbia Grad *** Profile
Tutoring - SATs / Regents / AP / College Counseling - COLUMBIA Graduate
Hi,
I am a Columbia University graduate and professional tutor with several years' experience. I tutor in NYC and Long Island. If you're not in the New York Metro area, I can tutor by email, AIM and phone.
I have had extensive experience tutoring for the SATs and SATIIs and scored an 800 on the SATII Writing, which is now the SAT Writing section. Don't waste your time and money on a course when I can work with you one-on-one to get closer to that perfect score.
I also tutor for Regents and Advanced Placement (AP) Exams in Math, Science, English and History as well as the SHSAT, the NYC high school entrance exam.
If you are interested in dedicated, top-quality tutoring for school or enrichment in any subject in elementary school through high school, or for standardized tests, please contact me.
I work on a long-term basis for students who need continued support to improve grades, study habits, and SAT scores. I also work on a short-term basis to help students catch up, or to help with test prep and finals.
Another service I provide is college counseling. I can help you with choosing a college, choosing the topic for and writing your college essays, picking and highlighting which extracurriculars to promote on your college applications, designing a resume to include with your application and preparing for the college interview. I also do EDITING work, so I can help you with your college essay if you've already written a draft.

Alex Stein Profile
As a certified professional tutor and UCONN graduate with a BS in Physiology and a BA in philosophy, I have 7 years and 5,000 hours of experience tutoring and teaching students of all ages and cultures, attending schools such as public grade schools, Gateway Community College, SCSU, UCONN, Yale University, and Choate Rosemary Hall.
Tutoring elementary school students means making learning fun and interesting in order to cultivate a life-long passion for learning. Middle school students are a favorite to tutor. At that age, students learn about themselves and start to think about possible vocations. So, tutoring these students doesn't just mean restating seemingly useless information. It's about character building, sharing wisdom, and allowing them to feel comfortable and passionate about learning. I enjoy tutoring High School students by developing their critical thinking skills (necessary for success in college). Finally, I have always excelled with the rigorous demands of college courses and always have loved sharing my practical guidance and quick tips to current college students.
Because teaching is a passion for me, I make learning fun, enjoyable, and practical. I love seeing personal and academic growth in my students. If all you want is to pass your next exam or course, then I love making these students less stressful and more successful.
My favorite subject to tutor: Organic Chemistry!

I move adults and children from a place of struggle and difficulty to ease, success, and joy. Some students come to me for a combination of academic skills and Brain Gym with sessions of 1 ½ hours. Others come for Brain Gym exclusively and their sessions may vary from 15 minutes to 1 ½ hours. Students love the movement component, especially when they experience their lives improving. I have been a licensed Brain Gym instructor and consultant since 1997 and a tutor for many more years than that. I love the one-on-one work with my students, for it's often full of fun, laughter, and play with a deep level of learning.

I enjoy tutoring speech because I competed in forensics in high school and college. I love to tutor American Government because I am a political junkie and once worked as a campaign manager for a State House candidate.

Brittany Porter Profile
Hi! My name is Brittany and I'm an aspiring writer and educator who's just officially moved to NYC. I graduated from a liberal arts college this year, with a completed publish-worthy Honors thesis (on ADHD, its history and quasi-neurology). I love to teach have many years of tutoring and teaching experience, both formal and informal. I've worked as a teaching assistant for four high-need high school classes, and this year Im working toward my secondary certification. If you're looking for someone patient, down-to-Earth, funny (but down-to-*business when we need to be), who can put you at ease with the material, look no further.
I am comfortable and have ample experience with kids of all ages, from 2 to 92, from your second-grade child who needs a boost with her reading to the high schooler whose trigonometry just ain't sticking, to the adult nursing student who needs help with orgo. I would also be glad to help with writing and editing papers and conducting basic academic research (MLA anyone?). I love working with LD folks (I think of us as quirky learners more than disabled ones&), or just taking anyone who's feeling frustrated and overwhelmed and bringing it all down to size for them. At the risk of sounding like a jack-of-all-trades, I'll say that I have comfort and experience with the following subjects, should you need assistance with any (or all?) of them:
* MATH: All levels through pre-calculus: basic arithmetic, ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY, TRIGONOMETRY/PRE-CALC, (I'm re-teaching myself Calculus now, so I make no guarantees with calculus proper.) Also well-versed in basic STATISTICS: Excel, number-crunching, theory, experimental design and set-up, etc.
* SCIENCES: My specialty is BIOLOGY, especially genetics, neuroscience, evolution and ecology. But if you're struggling with ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, you really should come see me: it is one of my favorite subjects to tutor precisely because I believe it's taught so badly most of the time (hint: orgo is not at ALL about memorization!!). I'm also comfortable with the intro chem curriculum, but please look elsewhere for physics as my background there is scanty.
* WRITING/English/Editing: I'm a poet, linguist, and essayist in my spare time, and one with a deft editor's touch. I would love the opportunity to help folks with their writing, as despite my gifts as a writer I know what a hell writing issues can be. Even the most arcane, technical academic writing can feel like delicate subjective stuff. When I look at others' writing however, I see it in a very different light: I clarify structure, syntax, and phrasing with ease and efficacy. No matter where you're at, I'd be happy to assist.
* BEGINNING/INTERMEDIATE SPANISH: Should you need a native speaker for advanced or really intensive work, I'm not it. I'm only semi-fluent, and very rusty with my vocab after lots of years. What I offer for the introductory students among you is a keen ear for pronunciation (Native speakers point it out) and a firm grasp of Spanish flow, conjugation and syntax: I get how the language works and can 'translate' it for you. Oftentimes native speakers or those that are fluent (unless they also happen to be great teachers) can't break things down for a beginner the way that I can, because it's harder for them to 'go back' to where you're at. I've helped dozens of my classmates pass their Spanish classes... or just understand that one grammatical thing they didn't get. This is because I am also a grammar geek and can cogently explain, for instance, transitive and intransitive verbs (ie., why we need those los and las after certain verbs, which to us native English speakers sound so out of place, and why this is only one role the --los and --las can play.) I also have you practice what we do outloud, right there, so it starts to roll off your tongue, too.
* TEST-PREP (SAT's, ACT, Regents, GRE, subject tests&): I hate standardized tests as much as you do. But I do well on them, I 'get' their logic (even if it's a stupid logic) and I hold no secrets sacred. I scored a 1480 on my SAT's (back when the max score was 1600), six years ago.
I'm available immediately, for summer finals or brush-up before Fall. September/October scheduling welcome, too!
I'm flexible as to location and am willing to come meet you wherever you are most comfortable: your home, your school, local library, this great café you love, whereverbut our initial meeting should be somewhere public. I'd also prefer to stay within Brooklyn or Manhattan; anywhere far out of the way will come with stark conditions.
My rate is $30 an hour. Negotiable ($20-25) if you want to schedule more than two hours a week, or if you are a single/struggling parent going back to school, because that means you rock. Block meeting times (ie., 4-6 hours in one shot) could also qualify for a discount, if that's how you roll.
Can't wait to hear from you, and GOOD LUCK with your studies!!

Hi, see my web site for more details. It's www.StudyTimeWithMissJudy.com. Rates vary, depending on complexity of subject matter, length of commute and if I'm tutoring one child or two.
In addition to private tutoring, I teach at a Silicon Valley afterschool enrichment program, with focus on communication skills, including language arts, public speaking, critical thinking, creative writing, and vocabulary. I'm also a credentialed substitute teacher in a K-8 San Mateo County school district - with terrific references.
One of my special areas of understanding is helping kids who've recently moved and had to change schools in the middle of the year. When I was a kid, I had to do that many times, so I knows how challenging those transitions can be. A little extra help can go a long way.
I look forward to meeting you and your child or children!

Individualized Tutoring in the North Seattle Region Profile
Individualized Tutoring Available in the North Seattle Region
About Me: An intelligent, caring, and very patient University of Washington Graduate (GPA 3.75) who is pursuing a career in teaching and education. I am experienced with kids and youth ages 5-18 and have tutored in after-school centers and classroom settings.
My Approach: Tutoring is not about what I know! My job is to help the student feel confident, capable, and comfortable with their homework and themselves. I practice an inquiry-based approach to tutoring: I ask questions, not give answers. I act as a guide and as a non-judgmental reflector of the students ideas and opinions. Especially in math, I help by clarifying the directions and working with the student to come to an understanding of both the problem and the answer. I am interested in long-term strategies for learning!
Areas:
- Writing - I love to help students write papers! Coming up with original ideas and laying them out in a clear, organizational manner is one of my favorite subjects to teach.
- Reading Early literacy reading strategies and practice.
- Math mostly elementary, but I am currently helping someone with trigonometry so& I am open to exploring the possibilities here.
- Spanish I am a fluent conversationalist and can help with grammar rules, sentence construction, and test prep& (I graduated in Latin American Studies and have traveled extensively in Latin America)
- General homework help lets lay it out on the table and see what happens!
I am more experienced with k-8, as this will be my endorsement focus, but am flexible and open to every student and family!
We can meet at your home or in a local coffee shop. Any other ideas are welcome as well.
I charge $25.00 for one hour $40.00 for two and definitely prefer to set up a regular schedule 1-3 times a week. Email to start the conversation!

Hello! If you are looking for a motivated, intelligent and responsible tutor, look no more.I graduated from Queens College (summa cum laude)in February 2008 majoring in Psychology (with a concentration on education) and Anthropology. During my time in college, I worked as an English and Math tutor for middle and elementary school students. Under my tutelage, one of my students aced the Specialized High School Admission Test and went on to succeed in the prestigious Brooklyn Technical High School.
During this time, I also tutored some of my fellow college students in Spanish. A native Spanish speaker, I helped my students improve their knowledge of Spanish grammar and their proficiency in conversation.

STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Teaching is really my passion. I feel this teaching passion can best find fruition in an urban setting. Students in an urban environment reflect those that have been forced to experience practical life experiences early in their lives and those that are struggling with lack of an economic advantage. Both of these student groups will benefit from a teacher who has a blend of experiences in real life and is fairly academically grounded. These types of students will need guidance understanding concepts explained to them within the context of real life. And I have had many real life experiences, which can be readily converted into class situations as part of class work, cases exercises and examples that will support the educational content. This is how I have taught in the past with great success. In other words I thrive in an educational environment that provides the student an education along with life skills which all of them will need as they grow up and face the world. On top of it, I have written a career column in a local ethnic newspaper, which was focused on helping young people understand the practical aspects of work life. I have also conducted College admissions counseling seminars and workshops geared towards high school seniors as they enter college. I know how to relate to young people.
The core of my philosophy of education is to inject real life examples and stories as much as possible relate the material to every day life. Whatever theory or concept is being taught, it needs to be peppered with actual, practical examples so that the concept being explain comes alive. I am uniquely positioned to do this because over the last thirty eight years I have been there, done it and seen it
I am a passionate teacher whose sole desire is to motivate all students to reach the truest extent of their potential. This I learnt from my father who taught in India for over fifty years.
My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that educational institutions should concentrate on their core focus the students and creatively dedicate themselves to enhancing educational standards within the practical constraints of financial and political realities. Creativity, enthusiasm, dedication and a positive can do attitude will do the trick and create educational magic in the classroom.
Finally, I am sure you will find that I do possess a wealth of life experiences (including the early death of my only son, who died of a rare genetic disease in his final semester in college), which has made me very sensitive to all types of people with all types of backgrounds. There is no doubt in my mind that because of my many personal experiences, teaching and professional experiences as a consultant and executive, I can be a true mentor to all who cross my path as a teacher.
Comments from students
Dr. Bob,
So I woke up in a cold sweat last night. The reason being is that I just remembered that I forgot to attach my resume to my Career plan paper.
I know its late now, but I figured that I would try and squeek it in. If you just wont accept it, thats fine, I know that I tried.
I wanted to thank you again for a great semester. I really learned quite a bit from you. It was most enjoyable. I will be in touch in the future, as I hope you stay in touch. We still need to head out to the golf club sometime.
Thanks again Dr. Bob,
I thank you for your time and a great semester.
I really appreciate you stepping in and taking over the class. I feel that I have learned a tremendous amount in such a short amount of time. I also appreciate your willingness to help students outside of class. I will be contacting you shortly to let you know that I have submitted my application to PwC.
Thanks again for all your help and have a great vacation.
Here is my project. I appreciate that you let me turn it via email. To be honest, your class brought the most insight to the actual real world of business. Like you said when you first came to class, sometimes changes happen, and how you perceive the change is how you look at change. To me, your class was a change in the right direction. Again sorry for the inconvenience.
hey Dr. Bob this is DR from your HROB 101 class i sit in front everyday, anyway i was e-mailing you to tell you that i enjoyed your class and learned a lot of information that i will use in the future. i know my test scores weren't the greatest but i don't think that reflects what i learned and i don't really care about grades. anyway i thought i would let you know that in my business career i will keep in touch with you and let you know how i am doing. this career project has really opened my eyes and i think it is an excellent project. anyway i will keep in touch and thanks again.
sincerely,
DR
Thank you Dr. Bob for all your help and support. We enjoy having you as a professor, we have learned so much from you.
Hello Dr. Bob,
i just wanted to thank you for a good semester. I appreciate your work to actually teach us something. I fell all to often we, students, do get to caught up in what we are doing and lose sight of why we are doing it.

Ms. Sandy Profile
Greetings! I am a professional teacher with many years of classroom experience in the elementary grades and at the university level.
My success with children, including those who need to catch up and those who are working above grade level, is very satisfying for parents. Many regular students have worked with me for several years in the Arcadia and San Marino area. I give students encouragement, fun, and solid skillbuilding in all subjects, especially English, Writing, Comprehension, test taking, and Elementary Math. My strong sense of humor is a big plus, and my deep love of children gives them the secure feeling that I am always on their side. As we raise grades together and expand their views of the world, we create a strong bond. I prepare special lessons to teach skills that are weak and I stress test-taking improvement. I bring creative thinking into many lessons and use visual activities as much as possible. My testimonials are revealing success stories.
For SAT and PSAT preparation, I tutor students privately in all the necessary skills in English and Writing. Many students can raise their scores dramatically after six months of dedicated work. The best plan is to begin at least one year before the first test. These meetings are priced at $50/hour and can be scheduled once or twice per week. The key to great success is a student's strong commitment to learning and enthusiastic attitude about constantly raising the numbers.
Because I have been an editor and published writer, I am a valuable resource for ESL adults and college essay writers. I offer proofreading, editing, guidance on content, and "lifesaving" revisions that help people pass courses they might otherwise have failed. I do this online (students can be anywhere) and in the Los Angeles area. I receive many referrals from students who tell their friends about their success after working with me. Please check the testimonials from students who have benefited from my strong instruction.

Paras Shah Profile
Hello and thank you for visiting my profile. I am passionate about all aspects of English and I take great pride in my tutoring skills. I pride myself in being a student and citizen of the world. I am a native English speaker and I have traveled extensively and tutored overseas as well as locally. I enjoy tutoring all aspects of English (such as conversational, grammar, writing, and recently ESL). I help students by simply not telling them to do things, but why it needs to be done so students can understand the concepts behind it. The results are students regaining their confidence in the writing skills and overall English skills (whether it is ESL, Business, standard or a combination).
I am available on weekends (noon to 4pm) and during the week (please contact me and we can arrange times). Email me at paras_shah@sbcglobal.net
My lessons will usually last between 1-2 hours.

Ms. Yvonne Le Profile
Hi everyone! My name is Yvonne Le and I am a resident of Vienna, Virginia.
I love working with young kids and have lots of experience in making the classroom a fun and enjoyable place to be. I have been an assistant teacher for the past 3 summers, teaching in both English and Vietnamese at VYEA. I am fluent in both languages as well as adequate in Spanish.
My rate is negotiable as I am looking to help as many struggling students as possible.
I hope to hear from you soon. You can e-mail me for more information about myself and to set up a meeting. A meeting is required before actual tutoring begins, for it is crucial that the parents and student(s) are comfortable with me before any studying is to take place (however, a meeting is not a binding contract to further tutoring).

Additionally I teach writing, grammar, oral/interpersonal communications, and literature courses which are my strongest subjects. My teaching style is student centered.
