Kevin "Cal" Neal Profile
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile.
THE INFECTIOUS LOVE OF LEARNING
The single most important thing that you can do in selecting a tutor is to get one who is passionate about learning, passionate about teaching, and passionate about the subject matter. That passion is contagious, and when the student realizes how interesting even the driest of subjects can be, then they are typically more interested in committing to the consistent hard work that it sometimes takes to succeed.
THE MAGIC OF MUSIC
I primarily teach music - drums and percussion - but as you can see below I also tutor a variety of other subjects.
My background as a musician includes over 25 years of playing experience on drum set, 15 years of orchestral playing, and another 10 years of marching performance. My music teaching experience includes both private lessons as well as group instruction (drum lines, orchestral ensembles), and includes most recently being selected by the Dean of the Los Angeles Music Academy to tutor for Harmony/Theory/Ear Training, and for Hand Percussion, working with both individuals and small groups (4-6 people).
I also have training and experience in recording using several popular DAW software packages, including Pro Tools, and served as a student assistant in the Academy studio. I help recording students set up their own home studio areas, getting mics and channels sorted out, how to apply effects, and get great sounds from the get go.
For more information on my musical experience and the lessons I teach, please visit: www.learningmusician.com/kcal71
OF TECHNICAL THINGS
Success in my previous career as a civil engineer required a strong background in mathematics and various physical sciences. My experience tutoring my peers while in college and graduate school prepared me to tutor today both college-bound high school and home school students, as well as those students already entrenched in college-level studies.
In my work as an engineer, I developed a strong skill set in Excel and Word, including programming custom macros in Visual Basic. I taught a series of workshops in Excel for coworkers, helping them increase their own productivity, and was the resident expert for these software programs at several companies I worked for. I can assist you with your next spreadsheet or word processing task, and show you some tricks to help boost your productivity.
SPEAKING YOUR MIND
I think that to be able to show that you have mastered a subject, or at least are making progress, then you need to be able to communicate yourself effectively. I have decades of experience drafting technical reports, analytical and persuasive essays (some scholarship award winners, I might add!), cover letters and resumes. I also have had to develop techniques for documenting calculations in the technical subjects so that my calculations could be more easily checked and corrected. These critical skills are often the deciding factors in who gets accepted to selective schools, who secures scholarship funding, who gets the best grades, even who is the best candidate for a job, and are ones that I enjoy coaching students on.
FEE SCHEDULE
I teach out of students' homes from Tacoma to Seattle, at a rate of $40 an hour, or I can teach you at my home in Lacey (near Olympia) at a lower rate of $30 an hour. Half-hour music lessons for young folks are available at $20 a half-hour.

I am an experienced tutor for learners of all ages. I am a state certified teacher, and hold an American Montessori Society teaching credential. I have spent the past 15 years teaching and tutoring students (elem to adults) in a variety of settings.
In my tutoring, I use many hands-on manipulative materials. I often use Montessori materials with students (even those who have never experienced Montessori education before) because of their amazing capacity to help students - no matter how old to really UNDERSTAND the concepts, rather than just memorizing the steps to get the answer the way that textbooks (and many tutors) often teach.
Tutoring Available In:
* MATH: elem through geometry and algebra 2 (at any age)
* LANGUAGE: all levels/ages: grammar, reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary
* TEST PREP: test-taking strategies, SAT, ACT, FCAT, ASVAB, GED, FTCE and others
* SCIENCE / SOCIAL STUDIES: all elem and middle school subjects, high school biology
* SPECIAL NEEDS: dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, autistic spectrum, processing delays, gifted/talented
* HOMESCHOOL: academics, enrichment (Curriculum development and learning environment design consulting also available.)
* OTHER: study skills, organizational strategies, public speaking
I can provide my resume, references, and proof of background check.
I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you, at no cost, to discuss your child's tutoring needs, and to develop a customized tutoring plan for him/her.

Stefano Campagna Profile
Background:
After several years in this line of work, I have tutored toddlers, middle-aged adults, and every age group in between those two extremes with ever-increasing success. I really enjoy tutoring as it is a flexible, part-time job that allows me to help many students grasp the material they are just learning at school or reviewing for the first time in years. Although I had only started working with established organizations in the past 6 years, I have tutored students privately on my own since I was in high school. My interests are in mathematics and the sciences, but I also engage students that have trouble reading, writing, and even, speaking English. I also am native Spanish speaker, so I have had the opportunity to help many students through a high school or college level sequence of Spanish. The progress and rapport I have developed with my students has been independent of whether the student was struggling in class, simply needed to practice problem-solving or conversational skills, or needed to review for Advanced Placement Exams. Regardless of a students initial stance, once I am aware the material that needs to be covered, I am able to customize individual lessons around the students needs.
Sample:
For example, when I work with students in math, chemistry, or physics problems, I first review the theory in order for them to grasp what objects we are studying. Simply plugging in to formulas means nothing if you do not know what their purpose is. When possible, I want students to appreciate the material for the sake of acquiring new knowledge prior to delving deeper into the subject. Then, after working out several examples either from the book, lecture notes, or my own experience, we would tackle larger assignments or go over previous test results. I occasionally give extra problems for them to work for future sessions, and we would go over these at our earliest convenience. I also tend to present students with different ways of visualizing problems, with drawn-out, symbolic, or more abstract examples.
Notice:
As a side note, some students have a hard time realizing that a noticeable improvement may take more time and effort than what they originally wanted to commit. I keep reminding these students that practice and dedication will reward them in the end and that initial frustration is normal. They need encouragement and motivation, but they also need to work harder to reach their goals. Others actually do not need to be tutored for as long or often as they planned because all they needed was some guidance or a refresher before an exam. These students are sometimes blessings because their improvement is obvious after the first couple of lessons.
Schedule:
At this point, I would like to mention my main reservations with tutoring. As a full-time graduate student, my schedule currently permits only private tutoring work from Friday to Sunday. Although day-by-day exceptions may arise, I am generally not available to tutor during the week as my own schoolwork takes a considerable amount of time. When I tutor privately, I normally have to drive to a students residence, and between driving, traffic delays and anomalies, and parking, I may lose up to three hours of time just to arrive at my destination to tutor for 30 minutes. I have had parents schedule last minute sessions for next day exams, even late at night, but I advise against that. I prefer working on a regular weekly, or biweekly, schedule with each student and have at least a ninety minute buffer to reach my next student. Given individual circumstances and my own changing schedule, I am very willing to have flexible meeting times on given days. That being said, I would prefer a 24 hour notice of whether a session needs to be cancelled or rescheduled for later in the week. I have had to charge my full hour fee for frequent last minute cancellations that cost me several trips.
Conclusion:
I am willing to travel to Weschester County, western Long Island, and any of the 5 boroughs of NYC. Below I have provided my relevant professional experience working with both schools and large tutoring companies. Please feel free to contact me for more information.

Alex Stein Profile
As a certified professional tutor and UCONN graduate with a BS in Physiology and a BA in philosophy, I have 7 years and 5,000 hours of experience tutoring and teaching students of all ages and cultures, attending schools such as public grade schools, Gateway Community College, SCSU, UCONN, Yale University, and Choate Rosemary Hall.
Tutoring elementary school students means making learning fun and interesting in order to cultivate a life-long passion for learning. Middle school students are a favorite to tutor. At that age, students learn about themselves and start to think about possible vocations. So, tutoring these students doesn't just mean restating seemingly useless information. It's about character building, sharing wisdom, and allowing them to feel comfortable and passionate about learning. I enjoy tutoring High School students by developing their critical thinking skills (necessary for success in college). Finally, I have always excelled with the rigorous demands of college courses and always have loved sharing my practical guidance and quick tips to current college students.
Because teaching is a passion for me, I make learning fun, enjoyable, and practical. I love seeing personal and academic growth in my students. If all you want is to pass your next exam or course, then I love making these students less stressful and more successful.
My favorite subject to tutor: Organic Chemistry!

Christine Maffuccio Profile
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. I am a distinguished teacher and tutor with six years of experience working closely with students of all ages and a wide-array of abilities. I am dedicated to the education of successful and struggling readers and writers, and so I strive to be a clear, patient, and warm tutor.
My most extensive experience has been at the college level. At the University of Maryland, I have followed established curricula and designed my own courses. In large and small classes and in one-on-one conferences, I have taught university students close, thoughtful reading and literary analysis; writing about literature; persuasive writing; and rhetoric. I have also worked in the University of Richmond and the University of Maryland University College writing centers. There, I have tutored undergraduate essays in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, too. As a college writing tutor, I have helped students understand assignments, write persuasive arguments, and organize their thoughts; I have also provided feedback on smaller, grammatical and stylistic issues.
My other substantial experience comes from the reading development classes that I have taught to students ages 4 through adult. In age-appropriate classes and in one-on-one settings, I have coached reading speed, efficiency, comprehension, concentration, and recall. I have helped students to hone note-taking, composition, and study skills. Additionally, as part of these classes, I have counseled students parents on how to foster a productive learning environment for their children. My time with younger students and their parents has helped me to develop and attitude toward teaching in general -- and toward teaching reading and writing in particular -- that extends beyond the the rigorous curriculum of the university. I account for the full and diverse development of the each English Language Arts scholar, young or not-so-young. My wide range of experience helps me to appreciate where each student has been and where he or she is going.
It should not be left unsaid that I am truly excited about language and books. My avid reading and enthusiasm for writing inspired me to declare an English major in college, to finish an English M.A. in graduate school, and now to pursue an English Ph.D. Even while reading and writing have become the central focus of my work days, I often curl up with a new book in my free time. I believe that my sincere appreciation for the English Language Arts cannot help but inspire and motivate my students.
I am currently living in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, NY. I spend most of my days writing my dissertation, which is tentatively titled Making English Low: A History of Laureate Poetics, 1399-1625, and which traces the intersection of the early English poet laureateship and early popular culture. I hope to finish by this spring.

I have been teaching at the High School, Intermediate, and college levels since 1971. For the last 15 years, I have been a High School substitute in nearly all subjects. My DoE license and background check are with the Windward District.
My Master's Degree is in French. I also teach Spanish, am a published writer in English. I studied Italian at college. I have traveled to 40 foreign countries on 5 continents, and lived 10 months in Europe and Africa. I am a "science junkie," particularly in biological, cosmological, anthropological and genetic fields. I have a solid background in History, Psychology, and even Bookkeeping. I am familiar with computers (primarily Macs.) I have been singing for over 50 years with different choral groups, and was Director of Music in my church. I have also performed in some community plays and musicals. I have studied Music Theory and Composition, although I do not play piano.
My philosophy of education is that there must be a foundation of basics on which to build. I always encourage association with familiar knowledge, and believe that all subjects are interconnected in some way. If a student does not grasp a concept through listening, I try to use visual or physical techniques. The student has the primary responsibility for learning. Any effort on the part of the student will be rewarded.

Ms Jacalyn Nosek Profile
I have been tutoring professionally for more than 25 years. I have a teaching background that includes junior high school, high school, and college. In addition to the subjects listed above, i also teach study, organizational, and planning skills and writing skills.
My educational background is in behavior biology, which means I have a different approach to learning. I look at learning as a physiological process involving sensory and motor nerves. Because of my background, I teach students using lots of color, diagrams, outlines, and other tools that make learning more natural and accomplished with less effort. I teach students to use all of their senses so that information is stored in multiple areas of the brain and then practice retrieval of the information until it is stored in both their short term and long term memories.
I love learning and I love teaching and I believe both should be enjoyable. The techniques I use have had great success with my students. My goal is always to empower my students with the skills they need to be in control of their lives. Every academic area I teach is also infused with study and organizational skills. I teach students how to take big or small projects and break them down into a manageable set of progressive steps with self-imposed deadlines that keep them ahead of their class. When kids are in control of what is happening at school their self-confidence and attitude soar.
Kids don't have to be scared and feeling hopeless, they can be successful and even leaders. My students go from C's, D's, and even F's to A's and B's. The first thing I do is diagnose the problem(s),learn how the student processes information, what's missing in his/her background, and what his/her teacher's expectations are for that class. Then I can create a plan of action that quickly produces positive results and gets the student into a pattern of growth and success.
It's my job to teach each student in a "language" that they understand. I can explain concepts from many different directions. My broad and long experience has also taught me how and where students will make mistakes and go astray. I have tools and methods that help them avoid those problem areas.
Teaching is my passion and gift. Whether it is math, science, social studies, study & organizational skills, or writing, if your son or daughter is ready to try some new approaches, I can help him/her succeed.

At present, I am working in a fourth grade inclusion classroom with special needs students. I lead several phonics and remedial reading groups and also work with individual children on IEPs primarily in the areas of reading, math, organizational skills, handwriting and writing.I also work with the classroom on the whole within an experiential curriculum. I have worked in an inclusion preschool with children from 3-6 with varying disabilities in the areas of reading readiness, early math and language development and social skills and in a 2nd grade inclusion classroom with children with learning disabilities.
I have also been tutoring several children over the summer and, now, into the school year, in the areas of reading, phonics, math and handwriting.
I am the parent of two children with special needs and believe that combination of professional and personal experience has worked well in terms of my sensitivity to learning difficulties, learning accomplishments, and has given me much first-hand teaching experience. Examples of my services include:

I have a Master's degree in Mechanical Enginnering and work part time as a tutor.Currently work as consultant for engineering firms and am planning to pursue PHD to teach full time in future. I would like to use the practical knowledge I gained during Master's as a Resident Tutor and combine it with engineering skills to make studying fun for you/ your child.
During my high school I realised its just not getting home work done or acing in grades , but its is the concept that really helps a student cross the barrier of Fear in any subject. Memorizing formulas would help you get better scores but would never help you excel the subject without proper understanding of the logic and concept and gain selfconfidence.

Hello to the English learners,
I am probably one of the older teachers on this site, but I feel I have the insight to know what works best in the classroom. I truly care about my students' success because I have lived in a foreign country and know firsthand what it feels like to be misunderstood and the level of frustration one faces in simple communication. When I teach, I like to borrow a phrase from President Obama, Yes we can!

A Tutors.org National Private Home Tutoring Network Profile
Our company has been tutoring students in Las Vegas for almost a decade and now provides to-your-door tutoring in several cities. Our tutors can provide a variety of services including: tutoring, assessments, evaluation, mentoring, homework help, study skills, organization, and test preparation. Our online system is completely transparent and allows you to browse through tutor profiles, request services from local prescreened tutors, and manage your account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Best of all, we do background checks and personally interview all our tutors before representing their services.
We screen through every completed tutor application and invite less than half to an interview for a personal evaluation and even do skills testing if they list advanced math or science like algebra, geometry, calculus, chemistry, physics, etc. During this second level of quality assurance, we rate our tutors based on education, experience, professionalism, communication skills, teacher status, math ability, energy, love for teaching, and many others. Even after we approve tutors to work with our students, we take many steps to assure they are consistant in providing quality services. We analyze tutor statistics for response times and renewal rates and often communicate with customers to confirm overall satisfaction with their specific tutor. In addition to what we do beforehand, our website allows the customer to sort through a customized list of tutor profiles so they can choose their own local tutor who specializes in the student's specified subjects. In other words, by the time the tutor meets the student, an invaluable match is almost inevitable.

Morganne Baum Profile
I have been tutoring for over 10 years, with more than 2000 hours in classroom and private tutoring, both in Boston and Las Vegas. I specialize in test preparation and helping students overcome their "math phobia" by teaching concepts in multiple ways. I am patient, and like to make learning fun! My rates are a sliding scale from $30-50, depending on the subject, driving time for myself, and what the student (or family) can afford. I strongly believe that most test prep services are way overpriced, and hope I can make a difference to those that can afford less.
