Kevin "Cal" Neal Profile
Hi! Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile. You can get more information about me, hear some samples of my playing, and get more information about lessons at calneal.com. I recently took over a teaching slot at the Music 6000 store in Olympia, WA and teach most of my lessons there. THE INFECTIOUS LOVE OF LEARNING The single most important thing that you can do in selecting a tutor is to get one who is passionate about learning, passionate about teaching, and passionate about the subject matter. That passion is contagious, and when the student realizes how interesting even the driest of subjects can be, then they are typically more interested in committing to the consistent hard work that it sometimes takes to succeed. THE MAGIC OF MUSIC I primarily teach music - drums and percussion - but as you can see below I also tutor a variety of other subjects. My background as a musician includes over 25 years of playing experience on drum set, 15 years of orchestral playing, and another 10 years of marching performance. My music teaching experience includes both private lessons as well as group instruction (drum lines, orchestral ensembles), and includes most recently being selected by the Dean of the Los Angeles Music Academy to tutor for Harmony/Theory/Ear Training, and for Hand Percussion, working with both individuals and small groups (4-6 people). I also have training and experience in recording using several popular DAW software packages, including Pro Tools, and served as a student assistant in the Academy studio. I help recording students set up their own home studio areas, getting mics and channels sorted out, how to apply effects, and get great sounds from the get go. For more information on my musical experience and the lessons I teach, please visit: www.learningmusician.com/kcal71 OF TECHNICAL THINGS Success in my previous career as a civil engineer required a strong background in mathematics and various physical sciences. My experience tutoring my peers while in college and graduate school prepared me to tutor today both college-bound high school and home school students, as well as those students already entrenched in college-level studies. In my work as an engineer, I developed a strong skill set in Excel and Word, including programming custom macros in Visual Basic. I taught a series of workshops in Excel for coworkers, helping them increase their own productivity, and was the resident expert for these software programs at several companies I worked for. I can assist you with your next spreadsheet or word processing task, and show you some tricks to help boost your productivity. SPEAKING YOUR MIND I think that to be able to show that you have mastered a subject, or at least are making progress, then you need to be able to communicate yourself effectively. I have decades of experience drafting technical reports, analytical and persuasive essays (some scholarship award winners, I might add!), cover letters and resumes. I also have had to develop techniques for documenting calculations in the technical subjects so that my calculations could be more easily checked and corrected. These critical skills are often the deciding factors in who gets accepted to selective schools, who secures scholarship funding, who gets the best grades, even who is the best candidate for a job, and are ones that I enjoy coaching students on. FEE SCHEDULE I teach half-hour and hour-long lessons at Music 6000 in Olympia. Half-hour lessons are $20 each, and hour-long lessons are $40. I also teach occasional lessons in students' homes and studios from Olympia to Tacoma for an additional charge.

Ms. Jennifer Young Profile
I am an experienced tutor for learners of all ages. I am a state and Montessori certified teacher. I have spent the past 15 years teaching and tutoring students (elem to adults) in a variety of settings. In my tutoring, I use many hands-on manipulative materials because of their amazing capacity to help students - no matter how old - to really UNDERSTAND the concepts! I never require long-term commitments or payment in advance, but I DO offer discounts to those clients who purchase a "Ten-Pack" or a "Twenty-Pack" of sessions. THIS CAN MAKE TUTORING AS LITTLE AS $29/HR! I can provide my resume, references, and proof of background check. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you, at no cost, to discuss your child's tutoring needs, and to develop a customized tutoring plan for him/her. For more information, please visit my website: http://www.Seeds-of-Knowledge.com. Thank you!

Stefano Campagna Profile
Background: After several years in this line of work, I have tutored toddlers, middle-aged adults, and every age group in between those two extremes with ever-increasing success. I really enjoy tutoring as it is a flexible, part-time job that allows me to help many students grasp the material they are just learning at school or reviewing for the first time in years. Although I had only started working with established organizations in the past 6 years, I have tutored students privately on my own since I was in high school. My interests are in mathematics and the sciences, but I also engage students that have trouble reading, writing, and even, speaking English. I also am native Spanish speaker, so I have had the opportunity to help many students through a high school or college level sequence of Spanish. The progress and rapport I have developed with my students has been independent of whether the student was struggling in class, simply needed to practice problem-solving or conversational skills, or needed to review for Advanced Placement Exams. Regardless of a students initial stance, once I am aware the material that needs to be covered, I am able to customize individual lessons around the students needs. Sample: For example, when I work with students in math, chemistry, or physics problems, I first review the theory in order for them to grasp what objects we are studying. Simply plugging in to formulas means nothing if you do not know what their purpose is. When possible, I want students to appreciate the material for the sake of acquiring new knowledge prior to delving deeper into the subject. Then, after working out several examples either from the book, lecture notes, or my own experience, we would tackle larger assignments or go over previous test results. I occasionally give extra problems for them to work for future sessions, and we would go over these at our earliest convenience. I also tend to present students with different ways of visualizing problems, with drawn-out, symbolic, or more abstract examples. Notice: As a side note, some students have a hard time realizing that a noticeable improvement may take more time and effort than what they originally wanted to commit. I keep reminding these students that practice and dedication will reward them in the end and that initial frustration is normal. They need encouragement and motivation, but they also need to work harder to reach their goals. Others actually do not need to be tutored for as long or often as they planned because all they needed was some guidance or a refresher before an exam. These students are sometimes blessings because their improvement is obvious after the first couple of lessons. Schedule: At this point, I would like to mention my main reservations with tutoring. As a full-time graduate student, my schedule currently permits only private tutoring work from Friday to Sunday. Although day-by-day exceptions may arise, I am generally not available to tutor during the week as my own schoolwork takes a considerable amount of time. When I tutor privately, I normally have to drive to a students residence, and between driving, traffic delays and anomalies, and parking, I may lose up to three hours of time just to arrive at my destination to tutor for 30 minutes. I have had parents schedule last minute sessions for next day exams, even late at night, but I advise against that. I prefer working on a regular weekly, or biweekly, schedule with each student and have at least a ninety minute buffer to reach my next student. Given individual circumstances and my own changing schedule, I am very willing to have flexible meeting times on given days. That being said, I would prefer a 24 hour notice of whether a session needs to be cancelled or rescheduled for later in the week. I have had to charge my full hour fee for frequent last minute cancellations that cost me several trips. Conclusion: I am willing to travel to Weschester County, western Long Island, and any of the 5 boroughs of NYC. Below I have provided my relevant professional experience working with both schools and large tutoring companies. Please feel free to contact me for more information. Alex Stein Profile
As a certified professional tutor and UCONN graduate with a BS in Physiology and a BA in philosophy, I have tutored thousands of students in over 50 subjects (9 years or +10,000 hours). I have experience tutoring and teaching students of all ages and cultures, attending schools such as public grade schools, Gateway Community College, SCSU, UCONN, Yale University, and Choate Rosemary Hall. Tutoring elementary school students means making learning fun and interesting in order to cultivate a life-long passion for learning. Middle school students are a favorite to tutor. At that age, students learn about themselves and start to think about possible vocations. So, tutoring these students doesn't just mean restating seemingly useless information. It's about character building, sharing wisdom, and allowing them to feel comfortable and passionate about learning. I enjoy tutoring High School students by developing their critical thinking skills (necessary for success in college). Finally, I have always excelled with the rigorous demands of college courses and always have loved sharing my practical guidance and quick tips to current college students. Because teaching is a passion for me, I make learning fun, enjoyable, and practical. I love seeing personal and academic growth in my students. If all you want is to pass your next exam or course, then I love making these students less stressful and more successful. My favorite subject to tutor: Organic Chemistry!

I believe tutoring received in the privacy of your own home means the student receives individual attention in an environment in which they feel safe and secure and free from the distractions of a classroom. Michelle Tan Profile
Hi everyone! I'm currently an undergraduate in Psychology and Anthropology at San Francisco State University. I love my courses and am looking to graduate with the class of 2012. I've had a number of tutoring opportunities that I really enjoyed and I've been told that I'm a great tutor. I'm humorous, charismatic, understanding, and I am able to easily bring myself to the level my students are at. I've had experience tutoring at nearly all levels of education. My most recent engagement was a volunteer gig with project READ in Redwood City. I tutored a 7th grader in Math and English. Before that, I was a Teaching Assistant for 2 college classes. One of those classes required me to proofread and grade undergraduate level papers. The other required me to hold office hours twice weekly to give personal tutoring to the students who came in. In the recent past I have also taught English to groups of students at college level. One of my classes gave me the opportunity to work with and teach kids with learning disabilities as well. I enjoy a very interactive teaching style with my students. Depending on my student's learning style, I have no problems using visual aids (drawings, charts) and even movement for more kinesthetically oriented students. I believe that for learning to take place there has to be a good relationship between the tutor and the student. Julia Stern Profile
Hello, learners and their parents-- I recently graduated from Bard College (which I highly recommend you look up if you are currently searching for schools!) with a degree in Literature and a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. I have been tutoring and editing papers for friends and classmates since I was in high school. In fact, many of the tutors from my college's tutoring center used to come to me for help with their essays. Now that I am back in New Jersey, I would like to offer my services to you! I genuinely love the process of helping young people with the subject matter I am passionate about, like grammar, vocabulary, paragraph and sentence structure, close reading and annotating skills, figurative language, punctuation, and even MLA formatting. I know that even though we all come across academic hurdles, and they can be extremely frustrating, finding the right tutor can actually make homework or classwork fun and rewarding. If you are looking for a single tutoring session, that is absolutely doable for me. But so far, I have never had a tutee that has not come back to me for additional sessions. I am young and easy to get along with, but I know my material extremely well, and I will push you (or your child) to reach your (his or her) personal best. - I use tried and true methods to increase SAT scores. I know this test is tricky, but improving your score is mostly a matter of learning how to approach each section. - I have experience as a teacher in an inner city, so I have had the opportunity to hone my teaching skills in a classroom setting. However, I prefer to tutor students one-on-one because the progress I can make with a single student apparent after just a few sessions. - My tutoring styles vary from student to student. Together, we will assess your preferred learning style, and I will tailor our sessions to the way your mind works best! -Fun fact about me: I speak English, Dutch, French, Spanish, and some German. As you can see, I love language in its multifarious forms. My love of language is contagious!

Christine Maffuccio Profile
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me. I am a distinguished teacher and tutor with six years of experience working closely with students of all ages and a wide-array of abilities. I am dedicated to the education of successful and struggling readers and writers, and so I strive to be a clear, patient, and warm tutor. My most extensive experience has been at the college level. At the University of Maryland, I have followed established curricula and designed my own courses. In large and small classes and in one-on-one conferences, I have taught university students close, thoughtful reading and literary analysis; writing about literature; persuasive writing; and rhetoric. I have also worked in the University of Richmond and the University of Maryland University College writing centers. There, I have tutored undergraduate essays in the humanities and in the social and natural sciences, too. As a college writing tutor, I have helped students understand assignments, write persuasive arguments, and organize their thoughts; I have also provided feedback on smaller, grammatical and stylistic issues. My other substantial experience comes from the reading development classes that I have taught to students ages 4 through adult. In age-appropriate classes and in one-on-one settings, I have coached reading speed, efficiency, comprehension, concentration, and recall. I have helped students to hone note-taking, composition, and study skills. Additionally, as part of these classes, I have counseled students parents on how to foster a productive learning environment for their children. My time with younger students and their parents has helped me to develop and attitude toward teaching in general -- and toward teaching reading and writing in particular -- that extends beyond the the rigorous curriculum of the university. I account for the full and diverse development of the each English Language Arts scholar, young or not-so-young. My wide range of experience helps me to appreciate where each student has been and where he or she is going. It should not be left unsaid that I am truly excited about language and books. My avid reading and enthusiasm for writing inspired me to declare an English major in college, to finish an English M.A. in graduate school, and now to pursue an English Ph.D. Even while reading and writing have become the central focus of my work days, I often curl up with a new book in my free time. I believe that my sincere appreciation for the English Language Arts cannot help but inspire and motivate my students. I am currently living in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, NY. I spend most of my days writing my dissertation, which is tentatively titled Making English Low: A History of Laureate Poetics, 1399-1625, and which traces the intersection of the early English poet laureateship and early popular culture. I hope to finish by this spring.

Alice Woodman-Russell Profile
I offer engaging, effective support in a variety of subjects, including: math, French, Italian, English literature/writing, SAT, AP, SSAT, ISEE, and college admissions/essays. I help students cultivate strong study habits and organizational skills. My passion for learning is infectious, and I seek to empower my tutees to genuinely understand and feel confident about their studies. I work with a number of students in San Francisco, ranging in age from 12 to 18. I generally build long-term tutoring relationships with students, providing support over the course of one or several years. I also offer shorter-term help for students looking to catch up, improve their skills, or prepare for standardized tests. My clients include those who already perform well academically, but who need a little extra one-on-one help to produce consistently top-notch schoolwork. I also work with students who struggle with a variety of attentional and organizational difficulties. My consulting with students and parents about college admissions includes: help with compilation of a smart list of prospective schools; strategy about entrance exams and high school courses; and support for the development and revision of stand-out college essays and applications. Previously, I was a teaching assistant for introductory French at Wesleyan University, and privately tutored students who needed extra support. I have also tutored seventh and eighth grade students in the Boston area in math, writing, science, and study skills. One of my tutees even earned his school's "Most Improved" award after two semesters of biweekly tutoring sessions with me. I bring a strong academic background to my work. I graduated in the top 10% of my class at Wesleyan University in Connecticut with a double major in Psychology and French Studies, earning me admission into Phi Beta Kappa (GPA 3.9/4.0). My very high SAT scores include a perfect score on the writing section and a near-perfect score on the SAT II French with Listening. I also scored 5/5 on the French AP exam.

Hi! I'm an energetic, patient, qualified tutor with a B.A. in English and a Spanish minor. I have over eight years of teaching and tutoring experience: * Music: Teaching private piano and guitar lessons for 8 years Have sung with both volunteer and professional touring choirs; private voice lessons in college * Spanish: Teaching elementary Spanish grades 1-8 Teaching a private Spanish class to four elementary students Leading private conversation sessions with intermediate Spanish students in college Private Spanish tutoring on the intermediate college level * English: Tutor in college writing center Online encouragement/critique of teen writing for Scholastic, Inc.'s website WriteIt * T.A. for an integrated humanities class focusing on literature, visual art, philosophy, and history; I work as a liaison between professors and students, grade quizzes and essays, lead discussions, and tutor students. I have also taught first and second grade phonics and worked as an elementary classroom aide. In college, I've been recommended as a tutor for Spanish, biology, humanities, and linguistics classes. My SAT math score is 690, critical reading is 760, and I scored an 800 on the writing both times I took it, so I am happy to help prepare students for especially the verbal portions of the SAT. I'm sure that you know as well as I do that mastery of subject material and even extensive experience does not necessarily mean someone will be a good tutor. I can tell you that what matters most to me is seeing the 'light bulb' go off in a student's eyes, and becoming not just a teacher but a friend and cheerleader as they seek to improve. My passion is finding a way to make something that seems scary more accessible and understandable - what I think of as translating a subject into learn-able terms.

I received my PhD in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University and have been tutoring high-school to college level students in Science, Math, and Writing subjects for over 10 years. While working towards my undergraduate degree in chemistry at Ursinus College (small liberal school on the east coast), I also minored in physics and received training as a writing fellow to assist students with written assignments. I have worked in a variety of tutor/teaching settings, including one-on-one private tutor sessions, group study, recitation instructor for high school and college students, and as a laboratory teaching assistant. Thanks to these different experiences, my teaching style is very adaptive and easily adjusted to the learning needs of the student. Having been a private tutor for some time, I have helped students overcome test anxiety, find unique solutions to homework problems, better understand general concepts, and prepare for upcoming standardized exams (AP, SAT/ACT, GRE, GMAT, MCAT). This has led to better study habits, and increased understanding of the material for the student, and higher grades/test scores in general. After studying science/math related fields for the last 10 years, I can certainly help those struggling with how to approach or view these difficult types of problems. So whether you are a student struggling through a particular course or someone preparing for an important upcoming standardized exam, I can help you reach your academic goals with personalized tutoring sessions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Christine Terry Profile
Hello, my name is Christine. I have plenty of experience tutoring since I began in 2001. My tutoring experience includes tutoring individuals and groups at the K-12 and university levels. When I started tutoring, I was tutoring friends of mine in high school, and it was then that I knew I wanted to help others learn new things. Once I started college, it made sense to me to choose tutoring as a career. Tutoring for the university was a particularly notable experience because I tutored students with learning disabilities, and this helped me become more flexible in my tutoring strategies. I am always ready and willing to learn new things. Coupled with the ability to learn things quickly, I can tutor anyone who needs help. I am very adaptable and patient. My priority is to make sure students understand the material, and it is important to me to make tutoring fun. I always make sure to ask students if they have any questions and if we are going at a good pace. I am flexible in my approach and I am happy as long as my students are happy and learning.

EleMental Learning Profile
EleMental Learning is a provider of after school tutoring and test preparation services with more than 400 STATE CERTIFIED tutors available to serve our clients. We provide a focused and customized private tutoring approach which is more intimate than what you'll find with a national tutoring chain, but with more choice than you'll find with an informal local tutor. Founded in 2005 by a former classroom teacher with more than a decade of practical experience, we have provided after school tutoring to hundreds of students from all age groups and in a wide variety of academic areas. Compare us against one of the mass marketed national tutoring chains and you'll discover why our approach is better: 1) We utilize ONLY state-certified teachers as private tutors. Your tutor will be a degreed educator with classroom teaching experience. We will not send you a college student or other untrained professional. 2) We provide a customized tutoring experience. Our private tutoring lessons are not mass produced. Instead, your after school tutor will customize a plan to reflect your child's goals and learning style. 3)We offer straight-forward pricing. You set the pace, and you simply pay your tutor's reasonable hourly rate.

Ms. Brooke Hanson Profile
SAT PERFECT SCORER! www.brookehansontutoring.com My name is Brooke; I am an energetic tutor who has worked for multiple education companies throughout the Los Angeles area-- teaching numerous subjects to students from ages 8-48, who have attended everywhere from LA public schools, to Marlborough, Harvard Westlake, and Crossroads. I have also been a curriculum writer, writing SAT prep curriculum as well as debate curriculum, for two established tutoring companies. I graduated with honors in American Studies from Stanford University in 2002, and completed an MFA in Cinematic Arts from USC in 2008. Though my academic background weighs heavily toward writing and verbal, I naturally excel in mathematics, and am comfortable teaching that as well (fun fact: I received a perfect score on the SAT, ACT, PSAT, and GRE math sections!). Once I became the most in demand and the highest paid tutor at the several companies where I have worked as a contractor, I decided to branch off on my own! I am a seasoned professional with SAT prep-- I've seen how several companies teach, I've worked with most every published SAT prep book available, and I know what works best and how to get results. Rates: $65-70/ hr within 10 miles of West Hollywood/Beverly Hills, $70-85/hr within 35 miles rates vary depending on length of session and distance. 1.5 hour minimum per session Group rates and online essay feedback services also available.

Emilie Bonney, M.Ed. Profile
I move adults and children from a place of struggle and difficulty to ease, success, and joy. Some students come to me for a combination of academic skills and Brain Gym with sessions of 1 ½ hours. Others come for Brain Gym exclusively and their sessions may vary from 15 minutes to 1 ½ hours. Students love the movement component, especially when they experience their lives improving. I have been a licensed Brain Gym instructor and consultant since 1997 and a tutor for many more years than that. I love the one-on-one work with my students, for it's often full of fun, laughter, and play with a deep level of learning.

Paragon Tutoring Profile
When tutoring I like to assess a student's level of understanding and skill set. I am then able to target precisely their needs. I use my sense of humor and start with their biggest area of need. I give positive feedback along with the constructive. I make the subject matter exciting and I make sure they know they are capable of doing anything they set their minds to. Tutoring is more than assessment, information and review. It is also a matter of trust, a sense of accomplishment and the raising of self esteem for each student. I was educated at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. I received a Bachelor of Arts in English and graduated with a 3.5 GPA. I made Dean's List and Honors Program and earned several sought after awards. In doing so, we are distinguished by the following characteristics: 1) 24 Hour, In-Person Response When academic difficulties occur, we will be there, regardless of the time or location. We are the only firm in Los Angeles that responds to academic emergencies in real time, typically within 30-45 minutes...even at 2 AM. 2) Personalized Instruction We work with parents to identify a student's strengths/weaknesses and create a customized plan for learning and achieving academic success. 3) Strong Communication After each lesson, parents are provided with an in-depth report of what was covered during the lesson. In addition, throughout the school year, we provide regular updates on the progress of our students. 4) Understanding Over "Knowing" We do NOT employ those who simply "know" enough of a subject to get by and then brush up their knowledge by reading the student's own textbook in the middle of a lesson. Instead, our instructors are experts in their subjects before the lesson begins. 5) Employee Verification All employees are subject to criminal background checks to ensure that student safety will never be an issue.
